Vintage ~1975 Datejust - Real or Fake?
I found my dad's old Rolex - was a gift from the mid-1970s. We think it's real but can't really tell (he threw away the packaging decades ago and along with it and official certification). I'm planning to take it to an official retailer when I have a chance but not sure how much they'll know about a 35 year old watch. It's also busted - so I can't tell what type of motion it has.
Questions/observations: 1) It seems to have a plastic face. Someone said it's acrylic which apparently is what Rolex used back then. Is that right? 2) There are holes where pins attach the bracelet to the case...I don't have these holes on my own Rolex (which I know to be real). 3) A friend of mine has some Rolex tools for removing the back of the case - but didn't have on that fit this watch. Is that a sure sign that it's a fake? Or did they have diff't gauges 35 years ago? |

Post some photos and we may be able to help you out. Even camera phone photos.

Here's a picture I took just now. Bad quality I know but I'll take more later.

What do you mean by the crown looking wrong? Thanks.

Welcome to TRF.......
It looks like a pie pan dial 1601 DJ. A model not often faked, but have you any shots of the dial, better quality, no flash? model and serial no. under where the band fits onto the watch, take it off with a toothpick. |

Its hard to describe what a correct crown looks like; but generally the one in the pic looks too long and too squared-off. take what i say with a grain of salt and go to your local rolex dealer. they will tell you... they will guide you correctly as they want it to be real rolex as they will want to sell you a 600 dollar servicing. harry

Pictures
Here are some additional pictures of the watch (better quality this time). Any comments would be very helpful. Only thing I can verify for sure is that this is a watch for the mid-70s - so, if nothing else, it's quite old. Thanks.

Sorry, but I think it isn't genuine. I'm not an expert, but I think the cyclops is wrong, the font is wrong, and so is the crown.

Hmmmmmmm
I am inclined to say authentic but not happy with a couple of things, end pieces, font on the 5 in the date wheel for staters Any chance you can take off the band (push a toothpick in the hole and push down) and either take a picture or let us know the numbers on the case at 6 and 12 o clock? |

I do not believe it is an authentic rolex.... if we could see the serial and model #'s between the lugs that would help a lot. And of course a picture of the movement would help also.
