Idea for a paperweight...

I had this idea for a paperweight... Get a Rolex 3135 movement (or similar) off eBay and have it enclosed in a lucite block (instead of, say, a bug or whatever they put in those).

It would be pretty expensive for the movement, but a very unique piece and something cool to look at.

...and the mold should be in the shape of the cyclops.

Materials: crystal or glass.

Set up shop, retire... after you pack the bags on your flying moose.

Here is the place that do just that for about $150.

I bet that if you really wanted to, you could dissolve the plastic away and use it again.

Its been done, I know of a guy that turned his old broken datejust movement into a keyring, probably it 1570. It was rusted beyond any hope of repair beforehand though, doing it to a good movement is a bit gutsy.

Don't think I would be willing to pay that much for a paper weight.

That is sooo cool. I love it

I say just drop your whole watch in, but make sure the crown is screwed closed, set the correct time and you should be able to use it as a desk clock Just give the paper weight a couple of shakes everyday to keep it fully wound. The five year service could be a bit tricky though

on the socaltrophy place, there is a crystal apple paperweight. If any of your wives are teachers that would make a great gift. I hate to hijack, because dropping a whole watch in one of those is the best idea ever

I would be cheaper to put a Waltham "turnip" pocket watch in a block, and just as interesting.

This is what I find interesting about the trophy site.

These are the promises:
Do you want to display your Financial Documents, Financial Deals or Personal Artifacts in a permanent and attractive format?

Southern California Trophy will take your most prized item and permanently encase it in solid acrylic. Our processes involve heat and high pressure to seal the document or item without damage. Once sealed, these items will never discolor or deteriorate.

For over 50 years, we have captured your prized documents in a sealed process that keeps out air and moisture thereby preserving your special memory or achievement
These are the disclaimers:
The embedment process is a combination of heat, pressure and solvency. These factors can affect many items, particularly plastics (can cause warpage or bubbling), rubber (bleeds), organic materials (can cloud or discolor), painted items (can peel, wrinkle or bleed) and pieces of metal (can split or crack the lucite), exposure to cold can also cause metals to crack. Factory testing will be performed before acceptance of order.

Due to chemical and heat reactions involved, one of a kind and valuable objects are not recommended.
Something doesn't quite add up.

I saw a cool Zenith watch display today. They had movements and parts encased in perspex. Unfortunately I'd left my camera in the car, but I'm sure if you go to your local Zenith dealer they'll have them too.

It seems to me like it would work, the only thing I'd be worried about is keeping the hands from getting bent (I'd probly want hands on the movement just for the heck of it) and getting the winding rotor in the right place (so it's not covering the balance wheel).
