Holding out for new Explorer II?

I know it's only rumoured at this stage, but an update of the Explorer II looks highly likely to happen following this round of Basel World.

Based on what's been circulated/leaked, are you likely to buy this watch?

I think black dial + orange GMT hand would be fab.....

As I am unlikely to buy more than one new Rolex over the next 2-3 years, I am wondering if I should wait for this Explorer and resist looking at the LV-C? The alternative is obviously to have the LV-C (hopefully at a good price) and then flip it if and when the time comes.

BTW has any of you held off buying another watch while waiting for the C-Subs at the rumour stage?

I would say wait and buy the watch that you know you would like to keep for years. If you buy from a trusted seller on this forum, you will save hundreds of dollars and this may make the costs of flipping more acceptable, but you still lose some money in the flip.

Which watch do you like the most? If it is the new Explorer II - you should wait. I feel reasonably certain that it will be out in 2011 and will closely resemble the leaked photos we have sen to date.

However, if you definitely see your collection including a submariner then you may want to pull the trigger now. Prices seem to have stabilized and you will get a great watch now. I would not anticipate Explorer II's to start hitting the market in appreciable quantities until this time next year. Once they do, they will be available for years so there should not be a rush to get one until you are financially ready to add another one to your collection.

One a personal note, I waited for more than five years for Rolex to update the 16610 with the maxi dial and hands. They never did. Unfortunately, my wrists are so small that the new super-cased subs just look clownish on me. No matter how much I liked certain aspects of the submariner, I always knew it was not 100% of what I wanted.

I ended up getting the current Explorer II to make sure that I had a watch that I knew I loved. If the new ones knock my socks off, I would consider flipping but I doubt I will have to.

Welcome to the manic-depressive world of Rolex collecting. Your bank account will be drained and your relationships will be strained. But you will have a damned nice watch.

i am the opposite, i got an exp II white dial before the rumored new exp II come out. and i got a 16610LV not long after the green Sub C came out.

i really like the classic Rolex sports watch. for some reason, i prefer them to the new super case counterparts. the only exception is the GMT IIc. (but that's another story)

Hello Kat, so you are on here too!! Even if a new watch was released next year it would be nearly 12 months from now that we would get to buy it.

Hey Peter! Evening Gentlemen all!

I have an abused Explorer II white from the early nineties which is a definite keeper. Knowing that a replacement is imminent, I am in fact on the lookout for a black dialled Exp II with lugholes.

I will reserve judgment on the LV-C till I see it. Practically, I am more likely to have use the GMT function in the Explorer than actually using a Sub to dive (tends to thrash the watches I dive with). On the other hand, most of us don't buy divers for diving.

In short, I have 3 Rolexes on my wanted list. And that's not counting the GMT void which one must simply fill.
