Nothing more fun than spotting a Daytona on the street and telling the owner how great his watch looks and how much I "wish I could afford one". Then I ask the guy to explain how to use all the complications on his Daytona and how he uses them in his personal life.....

The blank stare and muddled explaination.... PRICELESS!!!

Sometimes you get the honest guy who tells you he has no idea how to use the complications of the watch to do anything but tell time and he bought it simply becuse its a "cool" Rolex to own or becuse "everyone" has a Submariner.

Complications? Nothing complicated about pushing buttons. I use chronographs all the time.

Have to agree Dan and how many dive watches today are used for diving not a lot.Today the average Rolex watch gets a very pampered life and many today just wear a brand. And have no idea what movement is inside or what the bezel is used for on any Rolex sports watch except perhaps the WIS type.

I am the inquisitive type so like to know what all the functions of a watch do and how to make it work. Over the years I've had a number of multi-dial or multi-function watches (none were Rolex though) and being able to use the features properly for me was a must. That said the reality is most of these functions I never actually used in day-to-day life.

I had to go to training school for a week to learn how to precisely push the buttons of this very complicated chronograph. There is a special way to start it and then stop it. Very intricate procedure. As for the other complications on the Daytona--I am still searching for them. If you ever figure out what they are please stop me on the street and tell me!!

I think it is more than ok for a regular user to not know abouth the tachymeter scale... After all 90% of the end users never read the instructions booklets. The start and stop of the watch is much simpler but still, probably 20% know what it does...

B. Is this guy trying to cruise me.

So I would do as I normally do. I would ignore you and keep walking.

I do a similar think when I see someone driving a Mercedes. I ask how they use the climate control system, what stations they have preset on their radios. and if they use their heated seats. Typical response is they reach behind the back seat, pull out a bat and chase me down the street.

If you walked up to me in the street and asked about my watch I would probably shoot you. Pursue that kind of behavior at your own risk! Most people don't want to talk about their valuable possessions with complete strangers - it tends to create a reaction...
