Stainless Steel Day Date

I was on a cruise last week and in the lounge met a very nice professional older gent who had a 1975 Rolex and it was a day date but in stainless steel case and two tone Oyster band.

He has had it service by Rolex though out the years he said.

I felt it and it was light but I am still not convinced it was real.

My question to the experts is??

Is there such thing as a two tone Day date with a stainless steel body?

Thanks

That doesn't sound right to me....
I do not ever recall hearing of a SS DD....

I am intrigued to hear from the experts on this one.

I know there were one or two prototype Day-Dates made in steel, but they're exceedingly rare

Kinda what I thought and Chris is one of the men in the know for sure!

Thanks for the info Chris.

Seeing how there were no changes in 75 I doubt they would have
had any prototypes at that time so Id say FUGAZI

If it is real and a prototype he would surely know as those weren't
something youd just buy and if it was real and he was wearing it
thats a little crazy! Sure Id wear it out for an evening once in a
great while but on a cruise??? NO WAY JOSE

BUT

Ya never know!!!

Like I said in post #2 there were a few stainless DD's made and they are extremely rare.

They had ref # 0004547 and came with the cal. 3055 movement.

Just because you haven't seen or heard about them doesn't mean they didn't exist.

This gent who was a retired MD was very nice, very intelligent and I felt badly that I questioned its authenticity. He let me look at it and try it on. He told me it was rare and I reiterated that I was amazed that there was a DD in Steel.

He sent it to Rolex for cleaning and they did a teriffic job a few months ago but Rolex said they have no parts for this watch so beware.

Anyway, it was very strange to see my FAV watch in stainless steel with a two tone band.

The Doc told me the watch was very rare and valuable but now I believe him and wish I took pictures of it.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Don

If there were SS Day Dates, I would be wearing one right now. I would love a day date, but I don't care for yellow gold, nor am I in a position where I can afford white gold or platinum...

If it looked like this it was the real thing otherwise a fake.

I think that it's unlikely that he had one of the original prototypes simply because there were only a few made and collectors have a good handle on who has what..

It was more than likely the Tri-color "Tridor Day Date 18039b" that had a bracelet that sandwiched yellow and rose gold center-links and looked very much like a Two Tone SS bracelet............ but it isn't, it is all gold....
