IMO- 1 BR is a luxury in Manhattan.....and so is a Rolex, you gotta decide what luxuries are more 'important' (for lack of a better word) to you at different point in life.

As for your 39 mm Explorer question, I have one coming in soon, and I think that watch is 'da bomb' . Put one on your wrist and see how its sings to you. For me, the 39 mm Exp I was the 14th or 15th Rolex model I tried, and the ONLY one that sang to me so far. To each his own, I guess? Absolutely....try it!

Awesome! Glad to see a fan of the explorer... Everyone is pushing me to the sub...but it is too ubiquitous for me.... Mayb I'll get the blue white gold one later one....

The way I see it... I'll buy my fiancé 1 less Chanel bag and one less pair of Louboutin and I'll break even

Good choice - a classic. Congrats. Let's see some pics (preferably under a new thread) when you get it.

I would be looking at used swatch watches if I was spending 5k a month on rent. Now I no why I would never move to NYC. In Houston that would get you an apartment 3 times the size, A rolex for everyday of the week, and a sweet ride. I bet 5k a month probably does not even include a parking spot in NYC.

Never thought your post would generate a 157 replies and never ever thought that I would be the 158th responder. I have absolutely no comments to make on the question that you posed in your OP; that question has been answered one way or another in many of the above posts....and probably did not change your final decision to buy a Rolex.

I do want to give you congrats on getting your first Rolex.....and I sincerely feel that you made a great choice (with the explorer) and I do look forward to seeing a wrist shot and reading your comments after you receive your watch. Wear it well and enjoy.

One thing for certain, start a new thread when you post your pics.... and going forward always keep people guessing on your income; as giving hints on your income will rarely work in your favor in casual conversation.

Oh course it doesn't include parking. You can either try to park your car on the street or pay 300 - 400 a month to park it. A lot of NYer don't own a car though. Best public transportation in the country so there really is no need for a car.

Public transportation, No need for a car. Does not compute.

$300-400 a month for parking is non-existent unless you park by the river on the lower east side, south of Chinatown. I was paying $575 for my Spot.

The income is irrelevent unless you view the watch as a status symbol that only people in upper income ranges can afford. For most Rolexes, that would be an incorrect assumption.

As another poster stated, if you are buying "a" Rolex and not the watch you want, then it sounds like you are not ready. Hang around for a bit and let this bunch of enablers totally confuse you!!

I think you should get one as a reward and keep it your entire life to remind you of achieving whatever goal you are rewarding yourself for... no matter what other watches you will buy later. And trust me, if you are developing WIS tendancies now, you'll own many in your lifetime.

Ah but that is the thing I think yOur first statement hit the nail on the head. And a wis is interested in more than just the status level of the watch. Reread the entire (long) thread and tell me honestly that you think this is wis behaviour?

Latest Rolex: about 12% of annual gross income.
Total Rolex: about 35% of gross annual income.

Thing about a Rolex watch is it's just like having money in the bank!

Cool choice.

Next get an Omega Planet Ocean. I think it compares well to your buddies Subs.

Not sure if anyone watches the Office anymore, but recently, Michael Scott said that an engagement ring should be 3 yrs salary. So under those assumptions, I'm thinking a rolex should be 2 yrs salary??? hahaha
