Decision time soon - Steel GMT IIc or DSSD
I'm looking to spend some money in the next few days. Think it's going to be on either the steeel GMT IIc or a DSSD.
At present, I have a 16220 Datejust, a 16600 Sea-Dweller 4000 and a 116520 Daytona. I generally wear the Datejust and Sea-Dweller during the working week and I love them a little bit too much. Having been wearing them for 11 and 8 years respectively (since getting each as a new watch from an AD), I am thinking of retiring them as daily watches. As much as anything, this is because I really would be devastated if anything happened to either watch and I wasn't able to get an identical replacement, which would be impossible for the Datejust and extremely unlikely for the Sea-Dweller 4000 (unless I found a friendly dealer with an unworn one sitting in a safe). I have quite small wrists and it has struck me that hiding a DSSD up my shirt sleeve when at work would be pretty tricky, but it is a beast of a watch and I love it! As for the GMT IIc, it is fantastically beautiful on the wrist and I love the polished centre links, the green 24-hour hand and the way that it sits close to the wrist. I have also tried the two-tone GMT IIc and two-tone Subc with both colours of dial, but I knew they weren't for me when I put them on. I must admit that there are a couple of Datejusts that I also like (the two-tone 116203 on Oyster bracelet with silver baton dial and the 116234 on Jubilee bracelet with silver baton dial) and the white Rolesor Datejust II with black Roman numeral dial (with single indice marker) is stunning. However, I'm sure it's going to be either the GMT IIc or DSSD. The AD that I bought my Daytona from has basically told me on several occasions to talk discounts if/when I'm ready to buy something else. Whichever watch I go for, I'm going to try for at least 10%. Does anyone in the UK think that more might be achievable? Also, any thoughts about which might hold its value, or even appreciate in value, better? I'm not buying as an investment, I'm going to wear the watch (as I wear the three I already have) but one of the ways I am trying to justify another watch is by buying something where I don't think I'm going to lose much money if disaster ever struck and I had a forced sale! There is a decent chance that, whichever I go for, as soon as I purchase it I will start saving for the one that I don't buy. All and any thoughts appreciated! |

Given your current lineup, I'd lean more towards the GMTIIc.

Thanks for all the replies! So for it's unanimously in favour of the GMT IIc! Does no-one think the DSSD is the better choice?
I think the GMT is probably the better daily watch, but I'm also wondering about price rises in future and whether or not that might make it better to go for the DSSD now? (If they raise prices by roughly the same percentage across the range, it will go up quite a bit more). |

GMTiic. Don't let price speculation on the DSSD sway you. Buy the watch that you'll most enjoy wearing, which from description sounds like the GMT.

the price increases will happen no matter what; you already have a SD, unless you want an even larger watch, then I would go for the GMT II, as I also own a SD and could not get the DSSD to feel comfortable on my wrist due to the size.
Also factor in your wrist size; if you are a bigger guy, then the DSSD may be a good bet, but if you are like me, and don't have huge wrists, the DSSD just does not fit right for me. Good luck with whatever you choose! |

Thanks for all the thoughts so far. Any thoughts about how much discount I should achieve?
I'm planning on going to the same AD I bought my Daytona from last year and paying by debit card to try and increase their room for manouevre. |

Small wrists and DSSD don't go well together. The GMTIIC makes for a most excellent daily driver and would be my recommendation.

I'd keep what you have and not retire them. I think you'd have no problem finding a replacement if you had to. I'd wear the Daytona more if it was me. ;)

Well, they paid approximately 60% of the retail price, so ask for what they would be willing to discount to you, based on your past sales history with them, and the current demand for that watch in their geographic sales area. Remember that they have both fixed and variable costs associated with operating their business, and a certain amount of profitability that they strive for, in order to make it worth their while to even own and operate their store. You could also see if cash would be even more desirable, and if not, if they treat debit and credit card transactions more or less the same, use the card that benefits you the best.
Good luck and enjoy your soon to be new GMTIIc! ![]()

Deepsea - it is in a league of its own. Also, you'd be one of a very few wearing one in the wild. I also own a tt GMTc for "dressy" occasions. You just can't beat a DSSD imho.

Given your current collection, I would say GMT. Unless you have a very big wrist and like changes they made to the Sea Dweller.

This is a good point - thanks. I'm not convinced I have ever seen anyone wearing a Deep Sea in the wild...and I've only ever seen four steel Daytonas (not counting my own). I have seen quite a lot of GMTs, though.
