Question about no date Submariner

I have a co-worker who is willing to sell me his no date Sub. He lives far away from me so I can't inspect it right now but I have seen it on several occasions. I know its an older model and has acrylic instead of crystal. What years were acrylic no date subs produced?

Wow I would be very curious to see which model this is as it would have been produced in the 70s - early 80s. Has it ever been service before?

Okay, I've got a crappy blackberry pic

To be clear, I am not questioning it's authenticity. I trust this guy. He has the box and papers as well as a service receipt form RSC from 2002.

Is it worth paying $3000?

In my neck of the woods that wood be a very fair price for a 5513, even factoring in the additional price of a full service.

Make sure you get that watch serviced and replace the crystal as soon as you get it. If it's cracked, goodness knows what damage that could be causing to the watch.

Regardless when buying a used one you need to factor in the cost of a service.

Looks like a service dial, if I'm not mistaken....

Thanks for the feedback. It will most likely go straight to service if I buy it

The crystal has a horrible scratch but it is not cracked

What is a service dial? Is that bad?

they wore made for the early 60s to abt 1990 although the last of the plastic ones had new style dials like the 16610 if the older the better if it has pointed or squared off shoulders u hit it good if it has a rail around the dial thats another jack pot also meters first is older and more expensive older meaning 60s early 70s mid 70s already ft first I have owned many 5513s one of my current watches is a 1977 5512 ft first. I got it for a very fair deal as for I traded even for an old stainless 1600 datejust I had before

The 5513 went till about 1989. However; it received a gloss dial with wg surrounds in the mid-80s (84ish).

As Rolex uses what ever is/was the most recent dial varient it might be tough to actually know what year/era the watch with out the first three of the serial number.

That might have some impact on value and the direction you go as to service/restoration.

A "Fair Deal" is what President Harry Truman called his plan. He announced it in a speech on January 5, 1949. His Fair Deal recommended that all Americans have health insurance, that the minimum wage (the lowest amount of money per hour that someone can be paid) be increased, and that, by law, all Americans be guaranteed equal rights.

well you didnt steal it so u can still be buddies. I would say 3k leaves you room for profit bc it is hard to find these with box and papers u do have a newer one of the last 5513 in production so not yet at the top of the price but I would say you should be able to retail it for $4500 bc u have it complete with box and papers

Great price for this watch.
Btw, sometimes you can just polish the crystal.
Make sure, if you take it for service, to save all original parts.

For 3k you ought to be able to find a 14060 with a sapphire crystal...

When any watch is serviced by the RSC acrylic crystals are always changed as part of normal service.

I would prefer the 5513 thank you very much. This is the James Bond Ref. 5513 anyway with box and papers I would get a brushed finish on it that shiny polish job doesnt make the watch look good. Take it to a guy that knows to take it easy and not kill the buckle put a brushed finish and polish the crystal. I personally do not like the 16610 14060 or any one of these flat crystal subs I like vintage on the sports stuff. If I had a sapphire sub I would be trying to trade it for a 1680, 1665, 1655, maybe even a 1675, or 5512. I have a GMT II 16713 that I wear for the right trade. My favorite current watch is my 1977 Sub 5512 with COSC and I also have a 1961 pre pro Speedmaster which is another great piece in the collection.

My first was a 7928 Tudor with Pointy guards didnt know I had a treasure at the time at that time it was a cheap start $450 got me into collecting and trading at 17 in 1995

Dumb question but how can you tell if it's a 5513 or a 14060?

I'm new to the sub game

Take off the band and check the serial numbers. For a 5513 with white gold surrounds on the hour plots you're looking at the 8 million serial number range, but maybe the dial is a Rolex service dial. Also It should say orig. Rolex design with 5513 under it or registered Design with 5513 under it, depending on the serial number you find. It looks like a 5513 from the pics. $3000 is fair, but with a full service you my pay up to $800 at Rolex. Total of $3800 is still good.
