Springbars for NATO?

Hi -

There was a thread the other day about the pros and cons of NATO straps and one of the members mentioned the springbars that come with the watch should not be used. I currently use the springbars that came with my 16570 with both NATO and Zulu straps. Is this an issue? Should I be using a different type of springbar? If so, where would you find them?

Thanks.

chris

The spring-bars with any Rolex oyster will do, Nato straps were used mainly for military watches that had welded type non removable fixed bars.

Great question. Is it wise to have a second pair?

My concern is that the spring bars can become weak from putting on and taking off when switching straps.

I'm no expert and only relatively new to TRF and Rolexes, but I have read a few threads on TRF and other watch forums discussing your exact question - try searching something like "submariner nato spring bar".

In answer to your question, there have been suggestions that, because the original spring bars are flanged, the nato may catch on the flange and cause the spring bar to pop out. Some have recommended buying non-flanged spring bars of around 2mm thickness to use with natos. Some have also suggested that because the watches that come with spring bars are not designed for nato straps (as opposed to, as Padi said, those with fixed spring bars), the use of a nato may cause excessive wear to the lug holes from constant rotation and pressure.

However, I don't wear a nato with my own sub, so I can't advise you from personal experience.

The spring bars that originally came with your watch will work just fine. The beauty of using a Nato is that if for any reason one of the spring bars failed you would still not lose your watch.

I don't understand how a Nato strap could cause anymore wear on the lug holes than the bracelet.

Dan agree. My spring bars dont flop around. They are pretty tight with the Nato.
