Educate me - 6205 Submariner.

Hi guys, I'm trying to learn a bit more about vintage subs before purchasing and wanted to ask for opinions on the sub pictured.

It's a 1954 Sub, Ref. 6205 with an A296 movement, semi bubble back. The dial is apparently a mint original service replacement.

Anyway, there was a couple of things I wasn't sure about. I thought that the hands on these were supposed to be straight hands, not mercedes and the second hand had the lume dot at the very end. I also thought the bezel originally came with no marks between the 12 and 15.

Apologies if I'm asking some silly questions here but I'm keen to learn.

Anyway, can some of you give me some feedback on this. If the watch is correct for the year with a service dial what sort of money would I be paying for this.

I'm here to learn and your comments are disappointing.

If you don't want to answer fair enough, not sure why you feel you have to put people down and answer in such a manner.

Absolutely not meant in that way. But: this is a high end watch with a lot of potential problems. Problem 1: either the picture is poor or the area around 6 o'clock is damaged 2) hand should indeed be pencil ones with the second hand with the lume on the end. Those hands are unobtanium 3) bezel inlay should (I guess) be without the minute markers. Those bezels come along but will cost you an arm and a leg.

So either you have to be lucky and invest a lot of money to get this watch right or you'll have a watch with issues.

Thanks for the comments. I had another look and in my error it actually said "mint vintage service replacement tritium dial and handset"

The damage at 6 o'clock seems to be scratches to the crystal.

I posed the question to check that what I had learned so far was correct regarding this ref. no. or in fact the watch shown was correct but some anomaly.

Indeed the crystal, dial look ok. Price seems a little bit steep compared with the last one sold at Antiquorum (http://catalog.antiquorum.com/catalo...&auctionid=248) which had an original dial (albeit in poor condition) and original hands (poor condition as well) and a steel bracelet. Sold in March 2011 for USD 15k

I believe the no. of lines are correct in fact I think on the early 6205 models the "Submariner" line was not there.

ok , i thought that was gilt dials , or with no surrounds , many thanks for the info , its a generation further back than i tend to look at.
mind you that one does come up very quickly on the search engines ,
if i could be as bold as to say , think id wait for one without the service dial , and with the straight hands ,,,, but thats only cos i liked the pictures of the straight hands and the lolipop second hand more.
