How does this price sound?
I was looking at several used Rolex watches at a local highend Jeweler and noticed an R serial, Two Tone, 36, Date Just with a Tapastry dial. Over all the watch looked to be in good condition and the jubilee band had minor stretch. The jeweler is NOT an AD and is asking $3,900.00 for the watch. For those of you in the know, does this seem to be reasonably priced for a watch made in late '87 - early '88? Thanks

For a jeweler, it's tough to say. In the retail world, that price is perfectly acceptable. I would imagine the majority of the general public shopping for a Rolex are unaware of serial numbers & dating. As long as the watch presents well, I would imagine it will sell eventually. I wouldn't pay that much for that particular watch but then again I would never buy from a shop like that.

That's kind of overpriced but as sdwtchlvr said since most people don't know the serial numbers and they just think wow what a pretty Rolex they'll pay for it.
I personally wouldn't pay more than $2,500 to $3,000 for that watch and I think that's an honest value for it. |

Thanks for the answers guys . . . I too felt the watch was quite a bit overpriced but needed a bit of assurance from TRF. In the past 30 years, I've purchased 4 Rolex, all from AP's but I generally like to browse the Rolex anywhere I might find them. Not to say I wouldn't consider purchasing other than an AD but the price and condition of the watch would have to be spectacular. My first consideration of purchase would of course be from our trustworthy and capable friends at TRF.

way too much! Plus, it might not have a sapphire crystal. I know it will be close for that year.

Unless that particular watch is in superfine condition I wouldn`t pay much more than 2 grand for it.

I paid half that for my wife's R series 31mm TT Datejust with sapphire crystal and ivory Jubilee dial last year. I know that the 36mm usually sells for more than the smaller watches, but not that much more. The only way I could see the watch being worth that much to one of us is if it is a complete set, boxes, papers, tags etc. and was unworn. That being said, if it sits long enough, and the right buyer comes through the door, it may sell.
There is a shop near me that has a large selection of what I consider to be over-priced Rolex watches. I have been there a dozen times, usually wearing a Rolex, and they have never had a chance of selling me another one, because they are just too high. They have an Omega Seamaster 300M Titanium and Gold Automatic Chronograph that has been in the display case for years. I could probably make room for it in my collection, but not for what they are asking.

Thats too much for a DJ from 87/88. For 3,900 you can get a TT DJ from the late 90's early 2000's with box papers and tags. Thats a $2,500 watch all day.

$2500 max but I wouldn't buy it at a retail store in the first place.

I was offered a TT Datejust with a gold tapestry dial, Z serial, from an AD for $4,000 out the door and it was perfect not a millimeter of stretch in the jubilee. With box and papers
So, yours, waaaaay to much..... |
