Looking at ExpI 114270 or DJ 116200 for wife
Looking to replace my wife's mid 90's stainless lady date (ref 69240) with black dial, jubilee that I bought for her new on our first anniversary. I thought I had it narrowed down to a current Explorer I model (Z-serial) and recently saw a 116200 Datejust in Chicago this past weekend with a white dial and the Arabic numbers that looked beautiful when my wife tried it on. Sales lady said no discounts ever on Rolex and that Rolex was raising prices 15% the next day (this past Monday) giggled a bit to myself looked at a few others and went on our way down the Magnificent Mile. Anyway, both watches seem to have their pros and cons. The ExpI is a true classic but doesn't have a date. The datejust I saw with the white Arabic dial doesn't seem to have luminova on the dial anywhere. I found a similar one and attached the photo. Is there any luminescent markers on this datejust dial? Not that I think the ExpI will be a collectors watch (like a 1655 ) but I feel the ExpI does have a little more exclusivity than the datejust. The ExpI can be had for a bit less, not that a few hundred is all that much but nevertheless a pro. I do want the 36mm size for her. I know I can't go wrong with either and I was set on the ExpI but when I saw this datejust it really just popped. I want this to be a surprise for her so she can't choose. I want to purchase new with open papers. Also included a photo of the ExpI but don't think it is current because I dont see the laser etching around the inside of the bezel. Can I get some opinions and which one you think a girl in her early 40's would like? Thanks!

A notable individual closely related to watches in SE Asia, who owns a whole chain of ADs internationally just bought an Explorer I for his wife.
Not that the above really matters, and in my opinion, the Exp I is a better choice if you'd like to have a story to tell behind the watch. I'm seriously considering it as the next purchase for Mrs Jedi, minus the chapter ring which I seem to have taken a pathological dislike to. |

Bump... about to pull the trigger on the Explorer I, stick with the first choice right?
I love the Datejust but the ExpI is just so classic, hope she likes it. |

Welcome to TRF!
It is all a matter of personal preference and taste, but I would go for the DJ 116200 for various reasons: 1) It has a DATE feature. 2) MY thoughts: the white dial is more "feminine" than the black. 3) Again: A rounded bezel is IMHO more "feminine" than the sharper edged bezel on the Explorer. 4) Note: the 3,6 and 9 on the Explorer does NOT glow at night even though they look as if they do. So if your wife wants lume all around the dial, the DJ is the one to choose. 5) Also you get a MUCH better made bracelet on the DJ (the new Oyster bracelet now comes with SOLID centre links and a hidden "Easy Extension" link inside the clasp. But why not go for the 116200 with the JUBILEE bracelet? That would make the watch even more "feminine" (again, just MY thoughts): Here is another white 116200, but on an Oyster bracelet:
