Gmt 16700

Hey ladies and gents!

Looking at buying this 16700 which has been converted to a two tone.

Was wondering what it would be worth is this condition and what it would be worth in originall ss?

Is it worth getting for a good price and then changing back to original?

Its from a reputable dealer but not sure if i am getting into somthing that wont pay off in the end. I have noo clue about the GMTs so i need some experienced GMT "Masters" (get it? ) to throw in some input.

Thanks!!!

I would pass on it. Why pay for a Frankenwatch? I've seen a very nice per loved TT GMT 16713 on TRF a few days ago at a nice price. You'll never be able to get that serviced by Rolex. And you would have a hard time selling down the road. I have a friend who frankenwatched a Seadweller with a gold stem and a TT bracelet. He had a very hard time getting any Rolex watchmakers to service it. But that's just my two cents.

Thanks AJ. I was afraid that this would be a problem for service.

That is interesting. I am having the bezel and winding crown replaced right now at the RSC. It is $72 for S/S and $120 for the gold. The two tone bezel is the same price as the SS, $51. Hmmm

You likely won't have any problems with a service.. Rolex RSC does not refuse service on Rolex watches just because they have been changed, unless the parts are aftermarket.. They may ask if you want it changed back, but will likely not force the issue..

It was quite common to upgrade SS watches with TT parts, and many Dealers used to do it for customers...

You need to decide if it is personally worth it to you.. I should think that the cost would be slightly less than a fully original watch, but not significantly..

Thanks Tools! Do you think that the bezel, insert, dial, hands etc. looks aftermarket? I know some people can tell an insert is fake due to font. Does anyone know if the insert is aftermarket?

Looks nice to me. I wouldn't call it a Franken just because it looks as all authentic parts were used and done very well. These mods aren't as rare as one might think. The RSC shouldn't have issues with service but there are some great indy watchmakers that can work on it easily. Looks just as it should to me. If you like it and the price is right go for it.

With all due respect guys my friend had a problem just last year with RSC New York. BTW the YG parts he added were all Rolex that he had purchased at overseas Rolex watchmakers. He was told By RSC he would have to pay for them to change the TT bracelet and YG stem parts to the original SS condition before they would service his SD. Since it would cost him a lot he didnot have it serviced by RSC. True you may find a local Rolex watchmaker who will work on it for you. IMO if you want TT then just buy TT. I don't think your saving any money. The price point is probably more when you do the math. Like all purchases it is a personal decision. However, at the end of the day if you like it then by all means go for it!

Think you mean the bezel insert is the same price.

Depends on what you feel is a "good price".

I picked up my 16700 with original jubilee, dial and hands for well south of $4000. It didn't have the box or papers but I'm ok with that.

Go with an RSC and you'll loose the existing parts as they do trade in only.

Black Market here we come. Black Market means higher prices.

i'd figure: $200 for hands, $300 for a bezel and around $250 for a dial.

You might be able to sell the TT parts for the same price but who really knows.

Ok so what i have gathered is that these parts so far look authentic and that it was a fairly common practice to do so it doesnt turn this watch into a frankenwatch truely.

last questions would be what is the head worth in this condition?

Thanks for all the input and information. Awesome!!!

Problem would be an understatment, unless you have a good watch tech locally you can use.....

Perhaps your friends issue was that the SD only comes in one configuration.. hard to say with only second hand information..

I have had several conversions.. Datejusts and early 6694's.. none of them were ever questioned by RSC at service..

Larry, that's a good point. Since they never made a TT SD maybe they just shuttered at the sight of it. i saw my friend just last week sportiing the TT SD. And it is odd looking since the dial and bezel are original. But most non WIS never notice it at all. Some probably admire it
