Opinions wanted on a 1601 I'm thinking of
Greetings,
Hi, I'm back. Been bitten by the "vintage bug" recently and have my eye on this one. It's a late 50s 1601 but the thing I really like about it is the hands, which I believe are called Dauphine (sp?). Regardless, how does it look to you guys? If it's good what's a fair price for it the way it is with the leather strap and all. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm no Rolex expert but anywhere from 1500-2500
I got my 1969 1601 ss/wg with jubilee for 1600, but it was unserviced so I had to factor in the cost. If the hands are "rare" then that might push the price up |

They are dauphine hands they are not that rare, case looks pretty corroded around the edges, I would say this watch can no longer be waterproofed, just so you know. Not the greatest condition. Dial is also refinished the tritinium looks like it has no patina and is new

Agree with David!
The dial is probably refinished and relumed. I would stay away of this one just because the case is a bit too corroded IMHO. |

Thanks everyone. I was wondering if that was corrosion or what. How does stainless steel get corroded? I mean if it's "stainless" I always thought that meant it didn't rust. Regardless, thanks for pointing that out.
You have to admit though, for a watch that old it looks surprisingly crisp and clean otherwise. The bezel also looks new, definitely never polished. It's so sharp. I was considering this for my new daily driver and since I never wear my watches in the shower I may still consider it if the price is ridiculous. Anyway, thank you very much for your help.

With a bit of patience, I think you can buy a nice one at a cheaper price than this one.
No regrets |

It doesn't rust in the same way as regular carbon steel does, but it can and will rust slightly if it is scratched or gouged and conditions are right.

Stainless steels name started as "Stains Less" when it was first manufactured. It will tarnish and rust, just not as easily.
