hi all
this is a pretty sweet forum. i'm in the market for a rolex and have narrowed it down to the submariner, explorer 2, and the new gmt-master 2. i'm not familiar with the gmt function and tried searching...before being flamed as a newb, can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks.

You won't be flamed for asking a question! Basically the way I used my GMT was that the bezel and 3rd hand were always the time at my home in military time (22 equaled 2200 hours or 10pm). When I would travel into another time zone, the hour and minute hand were set to local time.

Also read SpaceDweller's review of the new GMT, which includes the actual directions as to how to use the 24 hr. hand...

Someone pointed this video out which nicely shows functionality of the GMT Master (albeit the previous edition, but functionality is the same)!

The GMT function is the hot set-up when travelling through timezones.
You can set the watch (both 24 hour hand and mercedes hand) to your local time-zone. Then when you fly or travel to another time-zone, you unscrew the crown, pull the stem out to the second detent, and the Mercedes hand will "jump" hour-by-hour to the next zone without having changed anything else including the seconds hand - which keeps on ticking... If you don't travel, it is a novelty...If you travel a bit as we do, then it is very handy.. I usually travel with either an EXP II, or a GMT Master....for the most part.

Welcome to TRF, Leon!
All three are great watches, but I personally suggest the SS GMT IIc. Here's my review of it. Also, this gif tutorial (by Jocke) is actually quite comprehensive:
