AP No. 2? Confused...BB/Volcano/Panda

AP community - I've come for advice (aka enabling and empowerment that only TRF knows how to do). I picked up my first AP (RO 15400) last month and am loving it. Since then I've been looking for a more casual/weekend watch.

So this weekend I tried on a Diver at the Bal Harbour boutique, but was not so happy with it. My major issue was not liking the screw-in crown at the 10. Naturally, I then proceeded to try on a few others. I didn't think I wanted any more chronos as I have a daytona on which I never use the chrono feature. Tried a BB and a Volcano (wanted to see a panda but they didn't have one). I have to say though these ROOs are big gorgeous watches - and not to mention how the chrono dials look on the tapestry and the recessed date wheel .

I'd have to say that the panda is probably the one I'd be most interested in because of the color scheme being a little more "down to earth" and I'm not sure I love a carbon forged case (maybe an acquired taste that will grow on me).

Thoughts/enabling to continue now please!

Also what are the chances of picking up a panda on the pre-owned market (have not seen any around)?

I think I'd recommend the Panda for you until you're ready to embrace the bolder AP models . There are some nice quality used Pandas on the market. Wink. I'd suggest getting it on bracelet and picking up the rubber, hornback, and F1 straps.

The Panda would be a great weekend watch, most here love that model. I see them for sale quite often, actually Mike (Kilyung) has or had a very nice one for sale.
As for the chrono use... I NEVER use the chrono on my Daytona, the fact that I have to unscrew the pushers to time something turns me off (and I don't wanna leave them unscrewed all the time). I use the chrono function on my AP all the time because I can just click it instantly.

Thanks, Mike. Yes, I assume buying the bracelet later will cost some $$.

I second Mike's opinion. I think you are ready for a Panda, nothing else.

Thanks. Yes - I've PMd Mike (liking it a lot). Want to do a little more "research" out in the field and try on a couple.

Whats the dial colour on your 15400 ?

Option A: White 15400.
Model of my choice would be in order:

1. Bee
2. Volcano
3. Panda

White 15400 is great for casual/suit up attire. On weekends, the Bee would be a fun watch to wear. Not to mention its LP and FC. I've been browsing through the AP market collection at Purist Pro and a bee would cost roughly 20k+ ( which is not too bad when you are comparing it to a mint Panda ). Volcano follow suit as I love how the colour pops out. IF the Lava was in FC, members here would be pulling their hairs out being indecisive over a FC Lava or FC bee. The final choice would be Panda. I'm not telling you not to get it. I'm just saying that its best to get a black+white dial combo for rotation week in week out. Once you've got that covered, heck you got even go for a RG 44mm. haha.

Option B: black 15400.

1. Panda
2. Bee
3. Volcano

Panda here would follow suit if you own the black 15400. It's look can be tamed with a rubber strap/bracelet. If you want an aggressive sporty feel, the F1 strap is everyone's favourite 2nd/3rd strap to go for. I'm biased towards the Bee as the panda + volcano are of abundance and can be easily found in the market at a fair price. The FC + sporty yellow dial is , in my opinion, miles apart from the other 2 models. Seeing that FC will be discontinued very soon, I would get a Bee. Not new ( from boutique ). Probably mint in a great condition. It's really for what's worth at a used price.

I hope you'll get to see a panda, and hopefully end up with a Bee. haha!

I would say the Panda makes for one of the nicest ROO's ever. The dial is sporty yet elegant, and a strap change to the F1 strap and it transforms this baby!!!!

Thomas, I am waiting for the (black) ceramic diver before I foray into a second AP to compliment our white 15400...
I watch this thread with interest.

Thank you for this thoughtful post! My 15400 is a white dial. I will keep on the lookout, but have not come across a pre-owned Bee for as cheap as you mention above. That being said I think I have my "workweek watches" covered between my rolexes, 15400 and Aquanaut and now I'm craving a true "weekend watch". My favorite line of your post above has to be "Once you've got that covered, heck you got even go for a RG 44mm" because we all know that's what's probably coming... someday in any case.

Yes. The strap changes really seem to change the watch completley.

The Bee is not for everyone but I think it's awesome!

The Panda is still a bold move but certainly more subtle. The Panda with F1 strap is really awesome though.

I'd go panda. Had a reservation on saying so if your 15400 was white, but with the others you have in the collection I'd say panda is the way to go. As already said, the strap and bracelet changes can make it seem like a different watch each time.

And it just looks so darn good in general.
