A platinum 41mm day date .... or a real high end watch ?
Here's the question ...
The platinum 41 mm day-Date is a very, VERY nice watch.... BUT.... it's damn expensive. I like Rolex a lot but let's be honest, they are NOT in the upper league. I mean they are godd and reliable but a Lange or a Patek is something totally different. The finishing of these 2 is 50 times better ;-) So , if you could spend that many on one watch, would you buy a platinum Rolex of would you prefer something else ? For example a Journe, a Patek 5960, a Lange 1815 chrono, Breguet ... You know what I mean, so many choices. THIS .... Or one of these ... (4 pictures but you can choose others too)

Well, while ur in the rolex forum I think you will find many that would choose differently at that price range.
One think I love about rolex is the durability. At that price point, I want to know it can go through anything with me. I'm certain it's my ignorance, but it appears to me that no other brand is as solidly built. Lovely watches, to be sure, but I'd go DD for the reasons stated.

If you feel as you wrote, then why even consider the Rolex? Seems that you answered your own question. Get what you like

I'd take a Lange of those mentioned, love the styling and their level of intricacy. Blows Rolex out of the water at that price point

And to be honest ... I would doubt too. First reaction would be a Patek or a Lange ... on the other hand, that Rolex is a very nice discrete watch. and a platinum case + platinum bracelet has something magical ;-) There are not many watches with a platinum Bracelet. And he can get a big discount on that Rolex ( 30 - 35%) this will be impossible if he would go for the PP 5960 so after all the Rolex would be a lot chepaer

If modern, Patek any day. If vintage, a whole world of options to explore.
I can rock up at Tedder Ave on the Gold Coast and see half a dozen DD2s and plenty of Nautilus's, Calatravas and perpetual calendars... Instead of being one of those guys, you could be the bloke wearing a 1950s Universal Geneve Polerouter Cloisonne dial or something equally as unique, depends whether brand recognition, finishing, or uniqueness is your thing, but you can get a fair chunk of any of the three for that kind of money, just not all three together.

Like always, these sort of question is very subjective and individuality based. Lets take these two scenarios for me,
IF I was wealthy to the point that getting a few of these watches is like buying a pack of gum at the corner store then I might consider getting them just to feel what they are like on my wrist on a longer term basis. IF I have to choose one but am able to afford only one of the watches you posted then I would choose the DD as the others just doesn't have that appeal to me. With that said, all the others are leather strap dress watch while only DD is on a bracelet...different style category. |

I'm partial to both Rolex and Patek but at that price point - Patek all the way.

I love my Rolex watches, but in that price range, I would go for the Patek every time. It's just in a whole different league, IMHO.

AP or Patek for me if I'm looking in that price range.
The Plat is a gorgeous piece for sure though! |

I've had two platinum Pateks including a 5960. I've also had two platinum day dates. I agree the Pateks are way above the Rolex in quality of finish. However, if I'm at the beach, in the Colorado mountains, at a great sushi bar or at the office, the pt DD covers it all.

I just bought a DD2 platinum so I may be biased but in fairness to the debate I think it comes down to the individual, my platinum is the end of my Rolex road, I enjoy it and appreciate its resilience. When I hand it down it will have both a sentimental and monetary value and I know it will stand the test of time. I personally do not like leather band watches and in reviewing the above I only personally like the PP however having tried it on it struck me as being too small. My next watch won't be Rolex, that itch is scratched and whilst i appreciate all that the above brands offer my next will likely be something other than them (maybe an IWC Or AP PC) then again it may be a G Shock or anything else that takes my fancy at the time. I am me and I make my own decisions.
Such questions and/or purchases are for the individual - polls, questions or invited opinions are somewhat immaterial however this forum is full of open minded watch enthusiasts and everyone is free to ask in the same way they are free to choose. Go with what you want, enjoy it regardless of what others think and give small thanks that you have both the financial ability and mindset to make such a decision free from bias. Be your own man and do what makes you happy |

I would go with another brand but am really not sure what I would get. I love Patek and Lange but at the same time I find Breguet's and Journe's style more original and unique. Still, no matter what I choose I would rather get something else than Rolex (although it remains a great brand).

For the price I'd have to go with the Nautilus - maybe in a slightly different configuration. I have a family member who just got the DD you show, and it is beautiful - but would still prefer the Nautilus at that price...

I'll probably be the only one to say this, but I'd take the F. P. Journe. I tried on that exact watch in the boutique a few weeks ago and was blown away.

Would it make any difference if you had already an AP Legacy, Lange 1815 (3-hands), Patek Nautilus Chrono. So already 3 high end pieces ? Would the platinum make a bigger chance in that case ? sorry for the big size but this is an important question and I would like to read answers for this quetion too

Patek 5960 of course.. 60 grand for a plat dd with a generic in house movement is not going to do it for me!also platinum is actually trading at the same price as gold so not really seeing the added cost for a plat timepiece.. However 25k for a gold version thats a buy!!

Good question but the answer would be the same for me as I would then most probably concentrate on Breguet or Journe. I must admit that I may be biased since the 41mm Day-Date isn't as nice to me as the 36mm model, had this one been the choice I would have probably given it more thoughts.

Patek, but I'd never spend that kind of money on any watch.

Lots of people talking about rock climbing or bars or whatever but for me that's not what a watch at this price range is about.
Buy a Sub for that stuff. At that price range without a doubt I'd want Patek or Lange. It's just pure class. A Platinum DDII is just too much bling. You're paying for the cost of working with platinum (not even the platinum itself). Most expensive Rolex I'd buy is a RG DDII that would be bought pre owned at least 25% of RRp. That Patek 5980R is stunning and it would not even come close if you asked me to choose that or a Platinum DDII. If I'm spending £40k on a watch I want it to be classy as hell. |

Patek or Lange between these choices. The DD2 would be my last choice.

Doesn't this post sound familiar?
Mind you, I am making a similar decision albeit on $25-$35k model watches from the same makers vs. a white gold DD and not a platinum DD II; but the same question rings true.
I think in the end, its a personal choice based on what is important to the owner. An argument for a Nobel metal Rolex or a more exclusive, finer finished piece can be made. The ALS, Breguet and PP are all finer pieces of horology BUT.... + The Rolex is far more robust to the wear and tear of daily use + Rolex service is far less costly and more timely So it depends on what drives your decision.
