Question about service.

Hello, new guy here, well new to the site.

Question, My GMT master from 1987 is going to go in to get serviced very soon(For the first time) there is nothing wrong with it, just time to get it looking like new. Should I sent it to the RSC in New York? Or to the watch repair shop my father used for the last 15 years in Seattle (The Watch Shop, they have been in business for over 48 years). They have worked on the Rolex GMT master my father had and always did a great job. They said they also will make the watch and band look like new. Looking for some advice please.

If the local watch shop is an AD with a ROlex certified watch guy, then I would go local. That's what I did.

Ditto what crimscrem said. I'll have to keep The Watch Shop in mind when mine comes due for service. It's nice to have a nice local resource. Welcome to TRF!

Bob

There's nothing wrong with using a Rolex Trained watchmaker at an Authorized AD.

If live in Phoenix, I would use the Beverly Hills Rolex service center, or the San Francisco Center, before I sent it to NYC.

The repair shop is a Mom and Pop shop, I don't think they are a AD of Rolex, But I belive the owner was train on Rolex repair. Also, what would the differance be between the RSC shop in NYC or the ones in SF or BH?

Also since my father had all his work done at the Watch Shop they offered me a 20% discount on labor.

Thanks for the answers to my questions.

that is a pretty long time without any maintenance, i've my sub done for the 1st time at the RSC after 12 years and believe me it came back looks like a brand new watch, as for the future RSC is the place to be.

Bobareno, how is the timekeeping with your GMT? If it's still good after twenty years, that's pretty impressive.

Hello, The watch is off up to 90 seconds some mopnths, then it will be right on for the next 2 or 3 months. The most I have ever seen was the 90 seconds. I think it keeps really good time, maybe not as good as when new. But I am sure the watch is wound up tight all the time with all the movement I subject it to. I'm very happy with it, but after reading the form I deceided to go ahead and get it serviced. Guess I will have to wear my Fathers old 1967 GMT master till I get mine back from service, they look the same to me, only his band is in better shap.

Welcome to TRF!

If your experience tells you that your AD can do the job to your satisfaction, I say go for it.

Please post some pics of the results of the service when you get your GMT back.

Bob,

Your Mom and Pop shop may do a fine job.......but they might not have a Rolex parts account, and perhaps non-Rolex parts would be used if necessary.. As long as it's been without a service, I believe that Rolex would replace the worn parts with identical new stock.... nothing would be left to chance and it would be returned with a 1 year Rolex warranty..

It's of course your choice.

I would use the BH or San Fran shops since they are on the same side of the country and turn around time might be shorter....(besides, you know those New Yorkers....:chuckle)

Give us some before and after photos regardless of where you choose..
