Jewelers reject Alaskan Mine

From today's paper:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Five of the nation's leading jewelers have sworn off gold that could someday come from the Pebble Mine, a huge deposit near the world's most productive wild sockeye salmon stream.

The jewelers, including Tiffany & Co., Ben Bridge Jeweler and Helzberg Diamonds, have pledged not to knowingly sell jewelry made from gold that might be extracted from the proposed mine near the Bristol Bay watershed in southwest Alaska.

The other two companies making the pledge are Fortunoff and Leber Jewelers.

Northern Dynasty Mines Inc. is developing the prospect in partnership with Anglo American PLC, a London-based mining company.

Northern Dynasty spokesman Sean Magee said he was surprised that none of the companies contacted Northern Dynasty before signing the pledge.

Good call that some of the jewellers signed that pledge, but it beats me how they are going to tell whether the gold used in the jewellery they sell derives from that mine or not!

Wow, they sure seem to care about the Alaskan landscape. I guess arming African warlords is the preferred method.

Concur. Symbolic BS in my view. Gold is gold. If this mine opens, the only way to honor the pledge would be to stop buying ANY gold. Same issue as "blood diamonds."

Sounds like "green pukes" Many of these same greenies want to tear down the dams in the Columbia [by Oregon and Washington state] to "save the salmon."

Some of these dams have been there for around a century. If the Salmon are only now being impacted in the last few years, it's not because of the dams.

Hydro power is clean and renewable and CHEAP, the dams have been paid for for decades. The dams also provide irrigation for farming, and flood control... It will cost a billion US dollars to remove the dams, what will this do to the local farming economy? What impact will that have on the price of your groceries? How are we going to replace that many megawatts? And with what? I thought they didn't like Carbon or Nuclear either...

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!! Or is it? Maybe the "greenies" have an ulterior motive, huh?

I'd say the owners of the Alaska mine are not in the right clique. You let the mine change hands and as if by magic a mitigation project or a design change will "insure NO detrimental environmental impact."

WAKE UP WORLD, some of the greenies are NOT your friend
