A Tudor trio
I guess I/ve been a bit remiss in posting some additions I've picked up so I'll try and make up some ground.
Since Tudor has made it's way back to the U.S. and having experienced Dan Pierce's wonderfull collection I thought one would be a nice addition. Luckly my AD picked up the brand so I had the good fortune to soo most of the whole line. A few observations; The fit and finish to me is on par with most anything out there and certainly benefits from the Rolex association the brand has. Not suprising since there made in the same place. The first to enter the fold was Tudors excellent Black Bay. For me the BB was an obivious first choice as it's gilt dial and enclosed chapter ring harken back to vintage days of the ture tool watch era. That it uses the older large crown sans crown guards only adds to it's vintage look. As a diver luminosity is something most consider important and the BB does not disapoint. The bracelet is a work of art. With micro adjustments getting a correct fit is easy. While the nylon strap that comes with the watch is exceptional I dearly love this watch on the bracelet. A lot has been made about the use of ETA movements in the Tudor brand and I'm not going to get into the in-house vs eta debate. I'll simply say the the 2824 movement in this particular example is running about as close to spot on as you can get. Kudos to Tudor for doing the eta movements right. The Pelagos has been described as a true tool watch with rather plain looks. Yeah, that might have some validity, but.....It's GREAT! The 42mm case has real wrist presence and combined with the light weight weight of the Ti case the arguement can be made it's a watch for all seasons. The matt dial combined with the smowflake hands and matt ceramic bezel make for perhaps the easist watch to read in all conditions I've had using luminova. Whatever Tudor is doing with the Lumi mixture papa Rolex could learn a thing or two. Gotta love pointy crown guards. Much has been said about the bracelet and clasp used on the Pelagos so I won't rehash old news. One nit to pick is that I do wish Tudor made a half-link for this one. Because of the larger clasp I find the watch to be either a tad tight or a tad loose. I've opted for a tad loose though the supplied rubber strap may be different. (I'm waiting for a new strap tool). Again timekeeping with the 2824 on this example seems to about -2. I may fix that. Just a personal thing about a watch running a tad slow as compared to a tad fast. Hears a quick comparison between the BB and Pelagos. Lights on, Lights off, Last to enter the heard was the Tudor Blue Chrono. Harkening back to the vintage days of the brand Tudor did a bit of a reintroduction of one of it's classis, but wisely made a few changes that maintains the value of the true vintage Monte Carlo. While it has a measure of luminosity I wouldn't compare it to it's diver brothers, One really has to hand it to Tudor for the refinments that went into the knurling of the bezel and pushers. For those that care the 2892 in this one seems to about +2 to 3. Again because of the micro adjustment fit is a home run. A small group shot. |

Thanks Mike, a nice write up and pics, and a nice refresher on the overall looks and functionality of these three. I'm just as keen to see what Tudor unveils at Basel as Rolex now.

Thanks for the mini review and post in general.
I've really started to take more interest in the brand since coming back to the US and plan on picking up the BB this year. |

couldnt decide between the 2 divers so just picked them both anyway?
question: why did they come out with the black bay and the pelagos when they are both divers? |

To me the BB clearly represents hommage to the golden era of dive watches offered by Rolex/Tudor of old. The Pelagos, I think, is Tudors attempt to create a new diver in the tool watch vein and perhaps acts as an outlet of expementation from the house of Rolex/Tudor. The use of a Ti case and bracelet with the corrosion resistence the metal offers and it's light weight I believe represents a first from the monarch. (Yes I know the DSSD uses some Ti on the caseback, but not the whole watch. That Tudor uses a matt dial sans WG surrounds (along with the bezel) makes a statement that this is purpose built watch. The clasp is also indicative of a tool designed for a specific purpose. It would seem Tudor is making an attempt to put some distance between itself and it's bigger brother while maintaining a link to a storied past. |
