It is sporting an a6538 style dial ( also used on some 5512/5513 milsubs)
Dies it have marking between the lugs / in the outside of the case back / inside the case back. At best it's an a6538 that's lost its rarest bit ( the German nickel bezel) |

Thanks Jed, looked it up, surely a rare bird if is all correct. I saw a thread where you mentioned that the bezel which is missing on this one is by itself worth a huge sum.

The fact that Mike Wood is interested in this watch says it all I think.

Hi everyone, I took the watch to Laings in Edinburgh yesterday and had it opened to verify everything. Inside it had a 1030 movement and had the numbers 6540 scored out and a/6538 stamped underneath. Apart from the missing parts they said everything was in excellent order. They advised me that it is all absolutly genuine. The manager seemed quite excited and, in truth, so am I :) Funny the things you have lying about at home.

Sounds good! I would repeat my suggestion of taking expert advice before having any work carried out on the watch, there are many horror stories, including a very recent one involving an A6538 and Rolex themselves...

My father bought it at auction in the early seventies along with a sextant, a diver suit for someone 6'6 and , somewhat bizarrely, the complete works of William Shakspeare.LOL. When he got it, it had both the permantent strap bars and the original bezel and strap. In truth, when I was about seven, my father had scolded me for being naughty and I took a butter knife and wedged off the bezel. Later that day, after realizing what I had done, I stuck it back on with blue tac and pretended the whole thing had never happened. The next time he wore it the bezel went missing. So, the moral of this story is, I suppose, what goes around comes around - or maybe, just don't have kids.LOL. I'm regretting that moment of pique now!

Since my father died in the early nineties, I left the watch in a drawer and basically forgot all about it. I did send it to Rolex about 15 years ago but they returned it without any repair. I suppose because they didn't have the parts or maybe because the serial number has been removed. Then last week I decided to send it to a place in America, TNS diamonds, who said they could repair it so i put it in a uninsured box and went to the post office. Later that night I thought I had better check to see what it really was and , over a few hours, began to realize it may have some value. So, the next morning I sat outside the post office and retrieved the package and posted my question on this forum. I am very grateful for all the help and am glad to receive such enthusiastic responses from you all. It's been really good fun and has been very exciting. It's quite a bizarre story but that's how life is :)

Wow.. Love the story. And glad you got the watch out of the post.. That would have been a stress builder after finding out what you have.
Great story and to have a nuttered Brit mod dialed watch ![]() I guess after all these years you get another kick in the pants for messin with the bezel ![]() |
