Thinking of an AP

Lately I've been looking at AP for whenever my next watch comes along. I have been looking at the 15400 and the Diver among possible candidates. The one thing that turns me a bit off of the brand is the large number of special editions and different themes like safari, vulcano etc. It all seems a bit fashion watchy. I know all about the exceptional quality and the great movements, even though some are modified. Anyway, what are your thoughts? I'm posting this here because I am pretty sure of the responses I will get on the AP forum.

AP makes some beautiful watches. I would definitely try them on if you never have. I was highly considering the 15202 and when I tried it on personally for me I just didn't like the fit but that was due to the shape of my wrist. Just my 2cents.

AP's rock. I also have Rolex, but really enjoy the AP brand. Diver is a great watch to start into AP. 15400 is another amazing AP. YOU need to decide, do you like sport (Diver) or casual dress/sport with 15400.

I've owned many different brands and AP is one of my favorites. A fashion watch? The Genta design is classic and has been around for quite some time. He did work for PP and VC as well. Now sporty?...yes. Especially the ROO line. Based on your post, it sounds like the RO will fit you better. It's one that will be timeless and won't be going out of style.

As a newbie to AP, I think the Royal Oaks - 15300, 15400, 15202s have long lives ahead.

The Royal Oak Offshores - while I DO want one!!! - strike me as fashion risks. At prices > $27k USD for SS...they aren't cheap either.

Nothing wrong with fashion at all, just boils down to taste and $$$ you are willing to spend.

I do feel the Rolex Sub and original Genta proportioned design for the Royal Oak will have the most staying power compared to the 44mm carbon / rubber models.

Just my opinion. :-)

Most of us aren't thrilled with all the LEs either, but that doesn't stop us from enjoying stunning and innovative watches that are beautifully designed and finished, and nor should it you.

Thanks for the responses. By fashion watch I do not mean to belittle the brand. I know its history and reputation, which is why I want one!! It's just a little off putting seeing all these Lebron James, Schumacher, Legacy, etc. models. I got turned off Panerai for that reason. That being said, I absolutely love the Gerald Genta design, it's classic. I also love the PP Nautulus. I just would rather AP behave a little more like Rolex and not go so heavy on the special watches and maintain a bit more brand integrity. And yes, I'm leaning towards the Diver, but the 15400 is so beautiful!

I own both the 15300 and diver. I love them both. I recommend trying them (15400 and diver) on seeing which one sings to you more. If the LE don't do anything for you AP has quite the collection to choose from.

I think the RO will be around for a LONG time to come. It's integral to the brand. It wasn't on my list when I went to Vegas to search out my next watch last year, but once seen, it couldn't be unseen and the rest (VC, GO, Blancpain, Breguet, IWC) all just faded into the background.

AP's are great watches, I have the diver myself. I think the diver is a great watch and it's perfect for someone that is just entering the AP market. I do agree with you that they have many different models, LE, etc. but find one you like and go with it. If you like it, who cares how many different models there are.

The 15400 is another nice AP.

The limited editions are more for the Offshore lineup. And that shouldn't turn you off getting a classic Royal Oak. Try both the 15400 and 15202 Jumbo on, and see which one sings to you. Also, make sure to check the Royal Oak Chrono as well, it's a fabulous looking piece

Actually, AP has scaled down the production of special editions in recent times. There are a few but not like in the past. The terms Volcano, Safari are actually nicknames for the current ROOs and they are not special editions.

Would you like your AP to be more casual/dressy or very sporty? If the formal, the 15400 and if the later, the Diver. Also take a look at the 15202 if it sings to you. All three are great choices for a 1st AP. From then on, it's a slippery slope.

Okay I will give you the LeBron was probably not a good move, but the Schumi is probably one of the most popular SE they have ever released (and it's stunning). Panerai is NOT AP (or vice versa). I think you really should get both the Diver AND 15400--you will eventually anyways, so just take the plunge now

Thanks again for the responses. I'm leaning towards the Diver as I think I want to go more sporty. However, I won't make up my mind until I try on the 15400 or the 15202. If I do the Diver I'm sure I will want to get the bracelet as I think it really makes the watch special.

If sporty is what you want, maybe look into a ROO chrono...the Panda would be my choice there...

It won't be easy to try on a 15202 as they are few and far between. You can check with Florida or NY Boutique as to when they will have one in but AD's don't get many as so few are actually made. I can tell you though it is an amazing watch and one of my favorite AP's ever made!

Agree with Ken, if you're thinking of PP, I'd go the 15202 route.

Just an amazing watch--but a little more dress up than sporty IMHO.

It is stunning. I think the dial's simplicity brings more focus on the various textures of the dial and case. Very elegant. Also, as my wrist is only 6.5 inches it may be a better fit.

If you haven't done so already, be sure to visit an AP dealer in your area or the AP boutique in nyc. Always gotta see these in person as they are quite different live vs in pics.
