Need help with a vintage Rolex. Thanks.

I do hope you will be able to help me 'understand' this watch, which I had in the house for ages, forgotten to the world.
The snap back case is London hallmarked 15 carat gold, 1908 and has the makers mark GS. The hallmark is an import mark for London and the watch was probably made elsewhere in Europe for the British market. Inside the opening hinged-back case there is the number 1109919. Is it any good? Anyone knows some more details about this? The URL to the picture is
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...pina/rolex.jpg
Thanking you in advance, Lorena

Welcome to the forums and we hope you will have fun here.

Ok with the watch in question, you are in luck.

In James Dowlings Best of Times: Rolex Wristwatches, there is a pic of a very similar watch (same dial and case but with different bracelet) on page 17.

the description is as follows.

LAdy's 9kt gold, porcelain dial 10-1/2" Rebberg with expanding bracelet. An unusual dial with blue numerals and red twelve. Circa 1914.

Mr Dowling estimates this watches value at between $1000-1200 USD.

I hope this helps.

Not you, baldie. What kind of help were you to this nice lady? Sheesh, what an ego!!

I believe her thanks were directed to the person who did help her - i.e. John.

BTW, Welcome to TRF, Lorena. Hope you'll stop by often and join us in the fun here.

Oops, sorry about that John. My mistake.

Kudos to Roger for providing that helpful information.

And JJ, you still don't qualify for thanks.

New Rolex question

Thanks for the warm welcome, the Nice Lady says. The you for the nice lady, the Welcomed Lorena says. I think I will take you up on your offer and pick your brains a little bit more...I have another watch which is puzzling me (how do I sleep at night?). It's a Rolex - methinks - and I strongly suspect the back is not original. I had it opened and they told me the number on the machanism is 6548 (or consistent with model N° 6548?). There is no number between the lugs. I have no picture of the 'insides'?. What do you think Knowledgeable Ones? Thanks again...

Looks to me like a Rolex 'bubbleback'. THey were produced from the late 1940s through to the early 1960s, if memory serves. I can't recall the ref. number on this one. Another similar model is the bombe (pronounced bombay). The Bombe is reasonably rare but don't command a premium. The bubblebacks are not rare but command a reasonable resale value.

Hope you're pleased with all the information you got from these tossers, Lorena. After all, it was I who furnished it in the first place. These guys don't know jack s**t about watches, anyway. All they are trying to do is impress the new girl on the block!!

A BIG welcome, Lorena. I'm sure you'll get used to all this madness as the days roll by. You please be good to me unlike these guys who are constantly bashing me around.

Hope you enjoy your stay here on TRF. BTW, it is mandatory to post a nice picture of yourself when you start out on this forum. Just so we all know what you look like (I'm sure we won't be disappointed!)

Cheers - JJ

Well model ref 6548 Oyster Perpetual, dates from 1955-64, the early
ones had the cal 1130, later models had the 1161.Are you sure there are no numbers between lugs, without serial its hard to date accurately. But with a explorer type dial would say most likely late 50s.Think what they call the bubbleback
were on the first auto models, slightly raised for the rotor from
around 1931-37.

Boy, what a lively bunch you are! Goodwatch, thanks a lot for taking an interest, but not only am I ingnorant in watches, I am also rather thick when it comes to handling forums. I do not know how to make the URL 'clickable', maybe if you copy/paste it? Yes, asking for advice and giving you more work. Let me try this way...

To answer padi 56 questions, no numbers at all: wanna bet the case is a fake as well? Thanks a lot for all the information you gave me, Ciao
