Rolex Case Back Typo?
Hey Guys:
I found a FS listing over on VRF for a 1966 Explorer I. Everything looked great until I looked closely at the case back. It is stamped 1016 and underneath that, VI 66. I thought the Roman Numerals indicated which quarter of the year the watch was made....last time I checked, there were only 4 quarters in a year... A Rolex Typo?? Photo via VRF

I've seen this before, and believe it is a typo, and should be IV of course, for 4th quarter.
They also messed up 'patented' as "PATEDED". |

Wellknown. Most likely a fault although others have suggested it's the devils work (666).

I'm guessing some poor smuck, who's only job was to typeset the stamping machine, got fired over this little problem....
