Rolex Case Back Typo?

Hey Guys:

I found a FS listing over on VRF for a 1966 Explorer I. Everything looked great until I looked closely at the case back.

It is stamped 1016 and underneath that, VI 66.

I thought the Roman Numerals indicated which quarter of the year the watch was made....last time I checked, there were only 4 quarters in a year...

A Rolex Typo??

I've seen this before, and believe it is a typo, and should be IV of course, for 4th quarter.

They also messed up 'patented' as "PATEDED".

Wellknown. Most likely a fault although others have suggested it's the devils work (666).

AhHaa...."the devil is in the details".....

I'm guessing some poor smuck, who's only job was to typeset the stamping machine, got fired over this little problem....
