I'm new to this forum and would welcome some help.

I currently have a bi-metal DateJust (that's the UK name for it) and am seriously thinking about getting an ExplorerII.

The question is should the watch that isn't being worn be kept fully wound to retain its accuracy?

Clearly I can hand wind the watch but if away on holiday etc. it would run down - will the stop/start affect the accuracy and is it worth purchasing an automatic watch winder?

I see that some of you guys have more than 1 Rolex, what do you do?

Well PRH first welcome to TRF as to your question,well a watch winder is not really necessary when watches have only a date complication.Your watch will not loose any of its accuracy while start,stopped etc.When watch was taken from factory to the point of sale.It could have been stopped for many weeks or months.If you don't wear a watch,its a good idea to wind them,say once a
month.Watch winders can be quite expensive for a good model like Rapport or Obita.The modern oils now used in your Rolex,do not thicken like the older oils.Service intervals now after 5 years plus,and manual winding now and then,will not harm your watch.

Well the deed is done I have just purchased the ExplorerII

Opted for the one with the white face (not to everyone's taste) but just love a white face on my Rolex.

My DateJust is my 3rd Rolex and comes with a white face and the gold Roman Numerals and the new jubilee hidden clasp bracelet

- just wished I could have justified a DayDate with a President Bracelet.

Well as for myself not a huge Explorer 11 fan,but out of the two I much prefer the white dial.Like the GMT but my favourite is the SD prefer this type of bezel.Good luck with your new watch wear it in good health.

Love your DJ. I've got TT with white dial and gold raised Romans on a Jubilee bracelet (but the older one - my DJ is about a '91 vintage). Great watch.

Oh, and enjoy the EXP. The white dial EXP is not my personal favorite, but it's still a nice looking piece.

Hi PRH,

A big welcome to TRF.

With just two watches, don't bother with a winder. You can alternate them between days and they'll still be running.

Good choice on the white Exp-II. I've got the black one at present, but the white one is good looking too.

Love that white dial, that is my next one.

I have Orbita Winders, and they are wonderful.

You don't really need them, however, they are fun.

A big thank you for all your comments. I decided to get a watch winder as the shop was offerring a good price on one and it will fit in the safe! A requirement of the insurance company!!!!

I am off on holiday to Canada and the States in October - any chance of a "good" price on Rolex out there?

As an example the Explorer II was in the shop at £2560 that's around $4545US.

How does that compare?

You will be better off buying in the US than in Canada. Virtually every watch is more expensive here than in the states.......

Agreed. The Explorer II now lists in Canada for CDN$6050 plus 15% tax, no discounts. That's almost $7K! Much better deals to be had in the US.

What a rip off, Johnny!!

Mansor's can give me a BNIB Exp-II for just NZ$5,700 = US$3,990 out-the-door. Take it out the country, and you get an even sweeter deal, tax free!!

Well it is a ripoff. And we can thank our federal government for provide such high excise taxes and import tarrifs for these high prices. The problem is, if you buy out of country and claim it when re-entering, you get nailed. If you don't claim it and get caught, they either take it away or let you have it, charge you the excise and taxes and fine you. OR... you could get it past the customs folks and be a happy chappy.

I've read a few stories of guys wearing the watch back to Canada and shipping the boxes via courier, but customs have opened the boxes and charged the taxes/excise on the cost of a new watch, even if there isn't a watch in the box.

Import duty on Mechanical Swiss watches ( coming to Canada from USA) is 5%, then the 14 or 15% ( depending on the province).
They don't even supply the Lube at customs.

To give an example, when I 'imported' my black leather strap from the US, the strap cost me US$30 plus $10 for shipping so all in all, about CDN$50.

Customs gave me a bill for almost $15 in taxes, excise and 'handling'. My high income taxes, plus my freakishly high property taxes, you'd think they'd get enough of my money.

I guess the T4 should say: 'How much did you make last year?'
'Send it all in.'

JJ, while that is a problem, the main advantage to living in Canada is that it's really, really, really, really far away from New Zealand.
