1680 Serial Numbers

I realise the topic of 1680 serial numbers has come up before and the conclusion was that reds go up to about 4m and whites start at 4.2m.

However, I came across this white today with papers showing a 39991xx serial number and I wondered what to make of it:

http://www.watchclub.com/w5896/rolex...l-complete-set

I should say that I am asking as I have a Mk VI red 1680 with a number very very close to that and which I believe to be a good one as it came from a respected seller and this white one got me wondering. (I'll post my red one in the red sub serial number thread once I get a better picture of it).

Can anyone help me understand what's going on?

Regards,

Ian

my strong believe is that at 3.9 I expect to see a red dial ;
anyway about this watch :
1) hands looks much older than the dial .. that doesn't seem to be the pristine one ( and this is a very bad point )
2) insert is a later replacement
3) paper is also quite odd : where is the damned chronometer certification ??
moreover at 3.99 I would like to see a paper that includes the chronometer certification.
it seems to be a condition pretty different from the pristine one ....

Agree on the price, even for London

Appears to be an incorrectly put together set. The incorrect papers are a red flag for me.

Be careful out there when looking at watches with "full sets", as many are put together incorrectly with the wrong boxes, papers, and accessories in an attempt to create the perception of authenticity.

An increased level of scrutiny is necessary to evaluate all the ephemera to make sure it is consistent with the reference number of the watch, serial number of the watch, and the country where the watch was sold.
As my late uncle would say, "It's a jungle out there."

I always wondered where "It's a jungle out there" came from. Now I know!!!

The only thing I see correct in this set is the Submariner booklet - and that would be based on the date stamping found at the back of the book. Also, the chronometers came with a combination chronometer/warranty paper, the one pictured is a warranty paper absent the chronometer certification. While a warranty paper (absent the chronometer certification) may have been completed and issued by the selling dealer, most do not consider it correct. I echo Beaumont Miller's observation.

I knew something wasn't right but this is not a dealer that I have heard anything bad about (other than being expensive).

In the past when I knew less I have bought a 6263 Daytona from them...

Hmmm... might be better if the OP of this thread:

doesn't get to see the fire-arms 'joke' in this one. The former thread seemed to have become slightly (and inadvertently) controversial, and his images were promptly deleted... while this one is seemingly just humorous. He, and others, might not find it so funny...

Just a thought.

I'm far from an expert, but in '76 weren't they still issuing punched papers? This sheet (which is aparently wrong for the watch anyway) is hand-written, and knowing as little as I know, that is a flag for me. Any decent print shop (home printer even?) can replicate these papers. I suspect it was cobbled together as mentioned before.

Also, price is COMPLETELY off base. White (red might be another story but still seems high to me), poor lume match between dial and hands, wrong bracelet, case polished, essentially no papers... I would be interested if the price had the decimal moved one place over...

To quote Monty Python: "Run away! Run away!"

massively overpriced, you could get two 1680's without box/papers for that price.
