I remember being asked that in public once. I replied, it's a Texas Timex hoping that would be ambiguous enough. But then again, I wasn't leaving it somewhere like a gym locker.
You probably said the right thing.

X2..that's what I would do. If you plan on continuing to lock the watch in your locker, you made the right call. Personally speaking, when I work out, everything valuable gets locked in the car, wallet, watch, everything.

When I am working out it is usually just me in a dark closet and I always wear my watch.

The only locker I ever left one of my good watches in was the one at the police station. Our lockers are full of all kinds of goodies (AR-15's, pistols, etc). You don't have to worry about your brothers stealing your watch there!

While I've never been asked at the gym. I have been asked on the commuter train. Depending on the circumstances, I respond, "Nah it's a knockoff. I got it for $50 dollars in NYC". Usually, it's asked from people who don't know a real Rolex from a fake anyway. People in the know usually just give you an approving nod and that's that. It also pays to advertise. That's why I wear my Ernest Emerson CQB Tanto bladed knife in my front pants pocket. We in Illinois don't have right to carry privileges so that's as good as it gets.

I do wear mine to the gym so it's with me at all times. If there was a hint of security involved then you did the right thing.

Positive - not a come-on line. I've been wearing my old Citizen Yacht Timer for the past few days...just to re-live old times. Still a great watch despite being 15-years old.

One time I did buy a $20 knockoff from canal st. in NYC...
I owned it for a total of 4 days... my lock was bolt-cut from my locker and the watch taken while I trained.
the best part is...they left my wallet and credit cards alone...and just made a
quick grap for the "Rolex"..
would have loved to see them when they tried to pawn it!

The moral of the story is...you probably did the right thing, but it's best to just not bring it in...
I could not imagine wearing it while working out...too much risk of heart-stopper scratches...

I think you said the right thing under the circumstances. However, keep in mind that if lying comes that quickly and easily to you, you may end up in politics!

Funny you should mention this, because I did the same thing just recently! For the first time, I denied my SD being genuine! At work, we have just gotten a new cleaning company, and when one of the new employees spotted my SD, he said "Hey, NICE watch!". He then wanted to have a closer look, and I even let him try it on! He asked: "Is it real?". I told him that I had bought in in China last year, but that it was a very good copy. Since then, he has not even looked at my watch when he comes in for cleaning my office.
