It is simply not inconceivable that a Dealer may have given out all the boxes for a certain model, it happens. Maybe a good customer wanted the fancy box for his new SS Daytona and the Dealer complied.

Many of the responses seem to believe that the Dealer is evil and in conspiracy.. simply ludicrous; he just didn't have a watch box for the model in question.

It was a phone call - nothing more. The OP didn't even have to leave his couch.

Not sure what the deal is with all the snarky comments. Usually when you buy something new it comes with some kind of packaging. It doesn't matter that Rolex ships the boxes separately. Rolex even has a chart dictating what box goes with which watch so they obviously intend for it to come with one.

The OP was purportedly told that display models, even if new, don't come with boxes. Doesn't make sense. No one thinks the box is more important than the watch. What is important is being told the truth. We need more information though and so far it looks like a hit and run post.

This is clearly a troll thread.

Boy did this guy know what buttons to push.

I did get a few laughs, but Whoah, what a thread.

How 'bout this. Decide what the box is worth to you. See how much that particular model is going for on the forum from trusted sellers. Then make the authorized dealer an offer he can't refuse. Or maybe he can but you need to be able to walk away from the table.

Nah..

Either thread or "AD" are bogus.

Not a realistic situation either way

If we locked all the threads that were "going nowhere" then half the threads on the Forum would be locked.
People love these threads - look at the number of replies.

If an AD gave me that response I would think it was a little unusual and I would want to have a bit of fun with him before I let him off the hook.

Walk away. There are lots of other Rolex dealers out there that will give you fantastic service, I'm sure.

Here's something to consider :
I purchased a 214270 on 11-28-14 from a low volume AD in Maryland. As I was getting ready to leave, one salesperson said to another "Do we have a box to give him?" After a small amount of time, a box appeared. This thread made me think of that. I purchased the watch for 5900$, so pretty good discount. I overheard the two salespeople also saying that they could give a discount on any watch but the GMT and SUB. SS I am assuming.

It happened to me once

We don't have all of the peticulars from the original poster but it did happen to me one time.

My local dealer was in the process of loosing the Rolex line when I purchased from him. He had no more boxes to go along with the Submariner. They gave me a women's datejust box to go with it since that is all they had left and were not able to get anymore boxes from Rolex since they were loosing the line.

I don't know exactly how they didn't have a box to go with it and the women's datejust box was not going to do it for me.

I had the dealer contact Rolex in NY to explain the situation. I also contacted them as well to explain that I wanted the correct box to go with the watch. Trust me, it was not an easy fight to get the correct box. I finally did and had to return the women's datejust box.

A lot of purchased goods have typical packaging for that item.

Most typical brand new $10k watches come with a box.
Especially Rolex brand new watches. This DOES effect resale and value of the watch, and the price of the watch from the AD should reflect that.
If they don't, I'd pass on that watch and dealer.
Hell, even brand new $100 invicta's come with a decent box. If they don't, they are discounted.

So, minimizing and sarcasm can lead the OP to loosing $$$ if they listened to people like you and tools.

Thankfully, you guys are in the minority,

Time to put this thread back in its box subject is now closed as the OP PTBOAT has not come back to contribute any more to the box thread.
