Is the Milgauss a popular model ?

I was wondering how the sales of the Milgauss are, just trying figure out what to expect with a possible discount from the AD, I know if a certain model is a big seller don't expect a discount, but if a model is a slow seller, my bargaining power is greater.

It depends on which color dial. I think ADs don't stock many but for the few they do I would't expect them to give them away. A less popular Rolex is still a Rolex.

I bought the 116400GV three weeks ago at a B&M AD and got an 8% discount. My first Rolex purchase, I do see them listed at 15% off on a trusted sellers site. I plan on buying another Rolex and will make that purchase via a seller on this site. You live, you learn!

When I was at the AD last weekend, they had three, Black & Blue with green crystal and white, I liked the Black, the size is perfect, plus I love the symmetry of no date dials. I did not talk price at all, I said I would think on it and return in a couple of weeks.

I think the black and blue dials are the more popular. I was offered a discount and no sales tax without asking for the white dial. Still a great reference in any case. Wouldn't mind adding it to my collection in the future.

I like the look, and I like the fact that it's a more rare model, nice to have something different.

I wouldn't exactly say 'popular', but definitely has a strong niche following.

It's big with doctors and researchers. The medical community especially has adopted it as a preferred choice to work near MRI machines and other magnetic equipment.

The Milgauss is not popular because it is plain looking and a bit to specialist.

However if you are a collector who is obsessed with investment value, the Milgauss could be a good long term investment.

I am currently wearing a 1655 Freccione Explorer 2 which is a fairly sought after model and like the Milgauss, it was unpopular in its day.

The simple truth is that the 1655 is a bloody awful watch compared to the Explorer 2 models that superceded it.

The orange hand only serves to distinguish between am and pm and the dial is far to messy to read quickly. It was nowhere near as good as a Sub or GMT and hence did not sell and is now rare and hence collectable.

The same could apply to the Milgauss in 25 years time, it will be rare and collectable.

Milgauss is one of the lesser popular models, mainly because it looks a bit funny to most people and isn't instantly recognisable as Rolex. As far as I know it's only popular in certain professional communities, like in medical labs. It's a great watch nonetheless, might just not be a good investment on short term if you're looking for that in a watch.

No the honeymoon is not over, this one is a keeper.

I think every watch has its minus points and the simple truth is that from a practical point of view, the 1655 falls far short of the models that succeeded it.

However I enjoy wearing the 1655 because it looks great and has a charisma that is rare in this day and age.

My main point was to the OP was that the Milgauss like the 1655 did not sell well in its day and as such could have a rarity value, in say, 25 years time.

True, although I doubt the current Milgauss will ever be as collectible as the 1655 or old Milgauss. Probably already sold in greater numbers. I'm glad you're pleased with your 1655. Still waiting to see pics.

I very much if anyone thought the 1655 would become a "collectable" back in the 70s/80s and possibly the same may apply to the Milgauss.

Collectors always want a full set and the rarer the model, the more determined they will become.

I am a bit reluctant to take a pic of the 1655 with a scratched plexi, it would be a testament to my stupidity.

I am back in the UK in 2 weeks from now and I will see if Brazzo gets rid of it and if it does, I will take some wrist shots.

Imho the black dial (non-GV) ref. 116400 is the one to go for. It been discontinued, but you can still find them in ADs.

The green crystal one did well. The rest did very poorly. IMO
It's struggling for recognition as a sport watch in a time other brands make 15000 gauss and Rolex is stuck with "mill" gauss!
Second hand black or white go for 4500$
That's poor resale value for a strong brand !!

I had the black gv but I flipped it. On hindsight, its a very unique reference with strong cult following. On thr watch, I do miss the heft and size of the case and how it sits tall, taller than most, and yes, it doesn't have a date!

I'm now toying with the thought of getting a zblue or the black Millie, will be a nice addition to the stable.

I'm curious as to what percentage of the million or so Rolexes made each year are Milgausses. If it's say 5% that would be 50,000. If of those, 80% are GV's (black or blue), that would mean approximately 10,000 white and black ones sold per year. That's pretty rare when you consider Rolex is a global brand.

I tried it on at the AD, it did feel a little more chunky vs my SubC but not anything that would stop me from owning, it is quite nice, the only thing that I am not warm & fuzzy about is the second hand, it's not a deal breaker, but I think a straight orange with lume tip would be nicer looking.
