smart watches, are they a threat to you?

just curious, I know it seems like talk of apple watch or any smart watches for that matter, seems sacrilegious here on this forum and I am not trying to stir up anything, so if you can, please keep it civil. I too am a watch lover ( all watches, not limited to just mechanical) and I can really appreciate what the new Apple watch can do. I know it's just a computer on my wrist, and it won't last long, can't pass it down to next generation, etc. In fact, that's why I love Apple and any new smart watches coming. It's because they will continuously evolve, making it better and improving our lives, in fact, i would be disappointed if they didn't come up with new models every few years...we already buy watches north of 5 figures, even if Apple has a new model every year at $600-700, i would buy the latest....as oppose to the same mechanical watch i would have for the next 10 years...

so my question is, why do you feel threatened? is it economical? like your watches will lose financial value? or losing certain status by not wearing your rolex? can they co-exist? we already use the latest technology anyway, so why are we so opposed to change??

I dont want them to become cooler and more mainstream than wearing a mechanical swiss watch. I dont want to be a hipster just because i wear a mechanical rolex. I would never wear a smart watch. Its just cheap electronics which become obsolete in a years time.

I don't fine the apple watch or any other smart watch appealing or interesting so not a threat to me. I did watch the apple watch video and was impressed, but having said that I'll never get one. Nothing will ever replace the feeling a good old fashioned mechanical watch like a rolex gives me.

I like apple (I have an iPad...one of the best things I ever bought) but I have an android phone. I don't see the apple watch as a threat, Rolex as a brand has more heritage and pedigree and stands for different, more long-lasting values I think. In fact in an age where they are starting to have wifi-free zones in cities and when you forget your mobile phone when you go out, and experience this sense of liberation....I think the appeal and value of Rolex is greater than ever.

Not a threat, my Rolex will be still ticking long after the smart watch is deemed obsolete and replaced by another soon to be deemed obsoleted piece of technology.

I don't see them as a threat to mechanical watches. The pleasure of owning a purely mechanical watch is knowing that someone or some persons actually put together a multitude of small mechanical parts that will continue to work long after it comes time to replace the batteries on those electronic marvels (which themselves will become obsolete very quickly as each new generation surpasses the last one).

I'm not sure I understand where you are coming from. I don't think anybody here should feel "threatened" by the Apple watch. People here have their own individual reasons for wanting to own and wear a fine, well-made, mechanical watch and I can't think of anything the Apple watch offers to negate any of those reasons.

I love Apple products, we have 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, an iPod touch and an iMac. That being said I don't feel threatened at all by the apple watch, I can't see myself ever owning one but "threatened" by it, nope.

Even though I am pretty invested in the Apple product line, I don't see myself getting a smartwatch any time in the foreseeable future.

All of these items have some kind of obsolescence cycle, perhaps longer in the case of a Mac laptop, a couple years in the case of a iPhone - I view a smartwatch as a disposable product which will become obsolete, stop working, or otherwise lose utility over time. My watches, with maintenance, will outlast me.

Your question was uncivil, but no, my watches will in no way be affected by any other technology.

The Apple watch is not the first smart watch and so far they have failed to gain traction.

Just because this device is made by Apple is no guarantee that it will have any lasting impact on anyone.

What is annoying is the assumption that those who have no interest in this device are in some way impaired.

I really hope the watch community switches over to these new fantastic Iwatches so I can swoop up mechanical watches for a pittance of what they are now, but it's but a dream. If I won the lottery tomorrow, the most basic model of Iwatch wouldn't even impress me, as I no longer have an IPhone, and never plan on going back. nothing beat the 4s in terms of looks and feel, but they were far too fragile. my waterproof Samsung with a damn near indestructible touch screen suits my lifestyle. and even if it were compatible with my phone, it wouldn't be taking up that watch real estate for sure. bad enough I have a cell phone in my pocket. I don't need to be anymore "connected"

As soon as there is a watch that will replace my main phone, has a few days of battery time and a decent user interface I will most likely get it. It would then go on my other wrist. I am not getting a watch that is not also a stand alone phone.
