I can see me one day flipping a lot of them towards a DD40.

That being said, I really enjoy having different brands I respect in my rotation and don't think I would trade out my APs or other pieces towards one all mighty grail, I like some variety.
DD40 also on the cards for me.

Oh the Dato is fantastic but very top heavy if you have a small wrist.

Hats of to you. If you can do, you should do it. I'd definitely have a draw full if I could do it (Only clothes and shoes for me in this respect though!). As it is I think it might be getting shot of 2 Rolex for one ALS L1 RG, if it works out and my 1995 TAG quartz for knocking around.

I thought I would go down this route. Then I tried a 40mm DD and the 36mm DD and it was the later that I liked better. Then I went again and tried the 36 on and some ALS and the seed was set for a ALS LG 1 if I can make it work out. We'll see if I can get there next year!

I have thought about this quite a bit this year, but not quite ready to do so. I think for me, a five watch collection would be ideal for the foreseeable future.

Currently, I have 6 Rolex watches in total. In the past, I had 10, but found that I was not wearing all of them enough to justify keeping them.

Not most for one, though some for an additional desired watch, down to 9 now, looking to get it to 8, hopefully stays there but we all know how hard that is in this addiction . . .

I LOVE the Datograph, but I'd need at least one waterproof watch to go with it, even then my current collection would only get me 2/3 the way to a used DG. I love rotating watches so a 6-8 watch collection is perfect for me. I still have a 5711 Nautilus as my grail but the DG is so choice!

Well, after thorough consideration, I chose not to sacrifice so many of my watches. The decision was made when I took out my 116718 and realized how much I liked that beast. Additionally, I do wear all my watches and getting rid of 4 Rolexes would leave my collection too concentrated with dress watches as one commentator mentioned. However, I am very excited by an incoming hopefully arriving shortly and will post what it is once in! Thanks for all the feedback.

Yeah, I was right, didn't think you could let the GMTc go.

Great thread, makes me think. I have five, would like to flip two or three, pick up one really desirable piece, but...which to flip and which to acquire?

Thanks to this forum, I have been fortunate to mature my thoughts around collecting rather quickly and have already realized that "less is often more". As a result, I have been able to only focus on very few pieces so far, mostly SS and sporty, and am now probably going to work towards one Grail piece...

Looking forward what you, the OP, have decided to get!! :)

I like variety but I'm not at my "Grail" collection so I've been moving things around as I build up to the grail collection. I think this could be accomplished with 3-5 pieces for me, but not one

I think about it all the time, but always have trouble trying to decide which ones currently in my collection would need to go. Right now I'm at 13 watches and often think I would like to get things down to around 5-6 pieces.

I did some consolidation last year when I went from eight watches to four when I purchased my Platinum Day Date II. I lived with that briefly but got pulled back in with a purchase of the Tudor Pelagos Blue, the Tudor Black Bay Black and the I repurchased the Hulk that I traded in the Day Date deal. So I am currently sitting on seven. I wear them all and am enjoying each for what it is. Where do I go next. Omega Gray Side of the Moon or the Dark Side of the Moon. I have wanted one for awhile and will probably acquire one in 2016. Without a new introduction at Basel 2016 I will probably pick up a YG Submariner with the blue sunburst dial as my next Rolex purchase. I am going to also not try to flip anything to make the deals work. My current collection.

Having a real trusted "companion" that you wear almost every single day and with which you will remember some of your life's events is def worth it!

So true! I continually come back to this philosophy.....but then I look at my collection and the wheels come off the bus. I would really love to have that one "companion", but I also love the variety that a collection offers.

Same here, had 9 watches at 1 point, 4 ROlex, 3 Pams, 2 Patek and 1 Blancpain, ok sorry that's 10, I flipped everything to just keep the 5712 and get an AP ceramic diver, which is the only one I have left, well have the BP and a Pam but they're on sale I never wear them so I consider I have only one, the goal is to get the 5712 back, add a 5167R and maybe one day if I can get through the psychological barrier get a RM 035-01 or a 055, for now in a few months and for a few years will go with the AP and 2 PP and really want one day to be ok having and wearing a 80K watch, when that will be the case I really would love the RM, I prefer the 055 but the other is awesome as well
