How much do Scratches suck on GOLD?
I was talking with my trusty AD yesterday and he was sporting a two-tone Sub, blue face, really nice. The one comment he made to me was that the gold oyster bracelet really gets scratched up easily as compared to all SS. For those of you who have both two-tone and all SS, how bad does the fact that gold is softer suck?
I'm sure most of you will say you just take it in stride and enjoy the watch, great. But do you actually notice that the gold scratches WAY easier and looks way more scuffed up after wearing it a while? Or does it just look even more awesome as the years go on... |

Part of the nature of PM and it happens rather easily.

I got to look at a buddy's TT Sub when I was just getting to know Rolex. It really had taken a beating through normal wear. It wouldn't put me off all-gold or TT watch, but I would take care to handle them differently than my SS models, probably wearing them with shirt cuffs only.
That's just me. I am sure others wear them in all circumstance and don't worry about it.

There's no question you notice how much easier the gold scratches... But no bracelet is immune to scratches.
Shirt cuffs help, but be careful: I've noticed that heavily-starched collared-shirts will definitely produce millions of hairline scratches. I don't care about scratches, personally... |

I do notice a lot more wear on my gold bracelets vs my stainless ones. Like the OP and others have said, take it in stride. I would prefer scratches on something I wear regularly equally rather than a show piece sitting in the box.

A close relative of mine purchased a two-tone submariner in 2009, he wears it all the time and everywhere. Yes there are scratches, but it still looks amazing. I am OCD when it comes to hair-line scratches and I think the yellow-gold really covers the scratches in a nice way.

It's really the PCL's that take the beaten. That includes gold, steel and platinum.
It's all part of the experience.

The only watches that don't scratch are the ones that aren't worn.

Marks are character building and part of the joy and pride of ownership. Unless you just worry about re-sell then it is hard for you to just wear and enjoy.

My two tone gets scratched if you just look at it wrong. It's not too bad as I personally love breaking in watches. I could see how it would bother some especially since the center links are polished and it does change the original look of the watch. I still love it. Can't wait to get it back from RSC

In my experience, that's not the case at all. It's all anecdotal, but my PCL bracelet looks just as fine as my Sub bracelet did after the same amount of wear.

True that. Of course the softer gold scratches easier, but golly-gee it sure do look perty! And if it gets too scratched-up, I just polish it a bit.

imo It's not all about the metal. It's more about how do you use the watch ?

I don't notice any difference between scratches on the PCL in gold or steel.

I think the best answer is if it bothers you, stick to brushed stainless.I had a bluesy five digit sub then a two tone 5 digit GMT serti.I babied the latter and never enjoyed the watch as a result.
Fast forward to today,I have just traded my one year old BLNR (plus cash) in for a 5 year old Full 18ct sub.In one year the middle part of the clasp was covered in hairline scratches on the GMT and that was steel. After a while they all blend in and the watch still looked great. My attitude now is,whilst treat the watch with respect, wear and enjoy it.Leaving my sub in a drawer for fear of scratching what is a £23 grand watch is the biggest waste of money. P.S. the usual incoming grail thread to be posted soon Kind Regards Nigel |

Hear, here, NMB... if one hates scratches, few watches qualify.

I would say buy a Rado V10K if scratches bother you, but I seem to remember seeing a couple of pictures of a scratched one. Now how in hell's name do you scratch something that, in theory at least, is scratch-proof because the case is made from synthetic diamond?

My TT scratches very easily even if it's well taken care of. I still wear it with anything though. I think the important thing is to have the right amount of wrist awareness. For gold, let's just say my wrist awareness doubled as compared to when I was wearing SS but the PCLs show hairline scratches no matter what. Just make sure to embrace that fact before getting one.

I agree, it is not gold or silver or bronze that makes the difference it is polished v brushed. And pcls mark up no matter what metal, and you soon get over it, PM Rolexes are lovely but they are working watches after all not ornamental display pieces.

yep...... Had mine for about 3 months, wear it everyday. At first you see every scratch but once it gets broken in you don't notice it as much. Gives it character in my opinion. the more and more you wear it, the more you appreciate it.

They definitely do scratch more easily because of the metal being softer. One of the reasons that I prefer SS (not to mention my retirement account prefers SS as well)

This is the perfect example of what someone else mentioned in reference to once the scratches begin to occur uniformly... The watch looks beautiful in the beginning, gets ugly for a bit with the scattered initial scratches, then turns beautiful again like this piece.
