Please Help Me Choose (A. Lange vs. Rolex)

To preface, I'm a new lawyer looking to celebrate passing the bar/new job/graduating by getting my first nice watch. I've narrowed it down to these three options, loved all of them, but can only afford one. Which would you choose?

A. Lange Saxonia 37 Thin ($11600)
Rolex Submariner ($7100)
Rolex GMT [BLNR, couldn't try one on in person, so I tried the LN for size/feel] ($8950)

(I didn't see the button to post a poll, so sorry about that)

The Lange is really nice, yet more formal jewelry wear than daily wear IMHO. As for Rolex, I personally love the visual of the Sub no date. BLNR could be useful if you time zone travel quite a bit.

What else is in your collection? That will help.

If you already have a sports watch, the ALS is a no brainer.

You're comparing apples to oranges.
You need to decide if you want something more or less formal

I prefer the GMT, Lange isn't my first choice because I don't like their style

I think the understated elegance of the ALS would be ideal in an office environment, especially if you will be wearing suits/jackets to work.

I'd go for the Sub now, work really hard and add a Datograph one day.

I don't have a sports watch yet, this would be the first watch of my collection. I'm trying to figure out which watch would be best for most situations.

Thanks everyone for the replies so far.

I worked in a senior management position for many years and wore a Rolex DayDate and never felt it was out of place. I have a GMT and I think it would be perfectly suitable in a suit environment. The Lange seems to be a dressy only watch. The Rolex can go both ways. It's a very durable watch as well.

In that case, sub or BLNR. Either would fill all roles needed!

In that case I'd get the Sub or GMT. Either would be a more versatile watch than the ALS, which is exclusively dress.

Lange hands down.

Look, this is a Rolex forum and most people biased towards Rolex... But Lange is out of this world. This is the watch you will wear, love and pass on to your kids. Oh and it flies under the radar.

Lifestyle?

By the sound of it you do not yet have a nice watch. If that's the case I would go for a GMT LN or BLNR. At some point you will likely travel for work and the GMT offers a useful function, unless you're inspecting deep sea rigs. A GMT will also be very versatile in that it can be worn with jeans or a business suit.

Lange produces somewhere around 3000 watches a year vs. Rolex's 1 million watches, if exclusivity matters at all to you. There are more iconic Lange's to consider later, like the Lange 1, Datograph, and Zeitwerk but all are significantly more expensive than a Rolex. There is a myth usually promoted by people who have never handled one or owned one that these are purely dress watches. Not so: the Zeitwerk is anything but a dress watch, as is the Datograph.

Before pulling the trigger make sure you spend a good amount of time trying on different watches - who knows you may end up making an entirely different choice from the ones you're currently considering.

Please Help Me Choose (A. Lange vs. Rolex)

As a first watch, I think the Sub is a better choice. I don't think the ALS is versatile enough (depending on your lifestyle and dress). The Sub can and will do it all. I think you'd get the best return on investment with the Sub as I feel you'd be able to wear it in more situations.

The ALS would be my choice for a second and probably final watch. I can't think of what else one would need besides a bulletproof Sub and a thin, gold dress watch.

That's my plan right now. My Sub and I'm saving for a Patek 5196R.

The Lange is beautiful...but I'd consider starting with a watch that you can wear at any time..something that looks ok with a suit or casual dress.

Isn't the Lange about $15k--not $11k?

Rolex would be more versatile and worry free--perhaps suboptimal for suit wear but everyone does it and looks fine. The Lange is a great dress watch that would look good with a suit but less so with casual clothes. And it's way more delicate than the Rolex.

Maybe ironically, the Rolex will draw more attention, while the Lange will fly under the radar (and fit under a cuff). Probably fine but some folks at big law firms worry about being too flashy in their early years. In my experience most won't notice, but it's something to consider.

I suggest the GMT as well, and LN on top of that. It's a classic Rolex and color, versatile, that goes from suit to jeans effortlessly. It's the most wearable toolwatch and I personally love and use the complication very frequently. And you want a date. The sub, while a great watch, is too sporty for a suit and missing a date. Great for the weekend or to alternate with a more formal piece. Maybe in the future you add a Simple Patek, Nomos, IWC or Lange to the mix. Then the sub makes sense and the GMT is your trusty worn in sidekick you'll never give up.

Welcome and congratulations on your accomplishments

I'd vote BLNR or Sub for your first. The BLNR is slightly more dressy with its polished Center links.

You don't need a date as a Lawyer?

GMT be my choice, although the Lange's simplicity is at the other end of the scale of classic dress watch

Lange, of course. A Rolex you can pick up at any other time. Although, a Rolex will be a dependable watch like no other.

See, if you appreciate watches, a Lange is as fine and elegant "mass produced" watch as there is; finer than a Patek. However, Rolex is the most dependable, reliable, solid watch you'll find.

On second thought, buy a Rolex first (with date, of course), and then buy a Lange.

If you dont have another watch, go with one of the Rolex's. Will go well with a suit or casually on the weekends. If you already have a sports watch, then get the ALS.

Rolex is a much more versatile watch. The ALS is a top tier watch, but not suited for everyday wear, especially if you are young and active.
