That's pretty nice of AD to offer that on 4 month old watch. Well done.

Let us know what you do.

I would go for it, the 5905 is nice but not as nice as a blue 5270 IMHO

I don't want the blue 5270. If I'm dropping that kind of coin, 5270r for me.

But I also like the 5905. The 42 mm is preferable to me vs the 41 of the 5270. I'd wear 5905 more.

Ultimate goal was to get 5905, and sell the 5980 and get 5524 and 5270. But this throws a wrench in the plan.

Is the 5270 the sticking date model or normal?

OP, great attitude for such a bad situation. Bravo...on your mental approach. I don't think I would be able to keep myself together...

What can I do? No sense in crying over it. It will get fixed and the attitude of my AD is refreshing. Now I can sit and squirm for months while trying to figure out whether to keep the watch or trade it in. First world problems. Do I keep an 80k watch or 160k? :)

Is the date issue not limited to the 324 and its date wheel?
Not aware of a similar issue on date displays using sub-dial and pointer.

I would stick to your original plan. But, maybe your AD is very keen to sell the 5270, I'd see what deal he'd give you on your 5980 if you want to sell that anyway.

I think in your case a simple mainspring replacement solves the problem so just for that i wouldn t opt the upgrade however i would definitely go for it if the problem occurs after the repair, talk with your AD if he accepts this route.

I'm wearing the watch today and frankly I don't want to sell it. I'm keeping it. It's too nice. The offer to exchange for 5270 was generous by the AD- but I'm keeping 5905. I'll see what he can offer me for 5980 instead. I don't like the steel bracelet on that watch.

Good move.

So is it working now? If not did AD give any indication of how long you might be looking at for repairs?

It works fine when I wear it but it won't hold power overnight. No indication on the repairs- I'm going to assume the worse and think 6 months. :(

I believe they send new references within the first two years of release to Geneva, although I am sure HSWA can repair the 5905. From what I hear, they want to keep track of quality control of newly released pieces and make sure Geneva watchmakers get experience repairing the new references. Hopefully it doesn't take 6 months for the repair.

It was nice of your AD to offer the 5270 as a trade-in for your 5905. Due to the higher price of the 5270, there is certainly a smaller market for the 5270 and so ADs want to sell them to their existing customers if they can.

So wore the watch again all day yesterday- this morning- its fine. Wore it all day the day before- stopped at 3am. no power reserve.

I have no clue wtf is going on. Maybe it just resolved itself - but Id hate to send it out and have it go missing for 6 months and there be nothing wrong.

In the same regard, If I dont send it and there truly is a problem, then its out of warranty later.

pisser. This was not the experience I wanted.

I don't think it would resolve itself. I think it needs to go back to Patek. So I would either send it back and wait for it to be serviced, or take your AD up on the offer of the 5270 as you want it anyway. You could then buy a new 5905 with the full trade in value you are being offered.

Please do the following (below), so that you’ll know for certain if it does have a problem, and where it (potentially) lies.

Wind the watch manually – you can’t over-wind it, so give it a good 50 full turns.
Leave it somewhere (your safe, bedside table, etc) dial facing up, having set or made a note of the time. Check the watch 24 hours later.
If it’s dead, then it definitely has an issue – make a note of the time displayed.
If it’s still running, check it again at 48 hours. If it’s ticking away merrily, then it means one of two things:
a) your auto winding mechanism is the culprit (reduction wheel issue?)
b) you’re simply not active enough during the day to increase the winding of the mainspring – so you’ll have to wind it more before putting it on each day or wave your arm about, like a lunatic, for fifteen minutes during lunch.
Maybe you could use both strategies on alternate days?

Im just trying to avoid dropping another 60-70 grand this year. Ive exceeded my budget for watches this calendar year. But its something to consider.....thanks for the input.

good suggestion. I will try. Although I dont see how Im not active enough but this has me perplexed.

Regardless, likely this is going back to Patek.

Sorry to hear what you're going through. I too own the 5905 reference. Purchased the first one that arrived at my local AD in Taipei, Taiwan- so roughly a year and a few months of ownership. Fortunately haven't experienced any issues.. lovely watch.

If I were in your situation, I'd still have it sent back. The wait is well worth the peace of mind.

To be honest, my personal experience and the string of issues I've seen as of late with PP has me a bit concerned and gives me pause about my next purchase.

One of the clasp's pushers fell out of it, brand new watch at that time too (worn 3 days)
