1570 advice please

HI,

I hope you someone can help me, I have a datejust with a 1570 cal movement. I've done a full restoration on the watch and serviced the movement. Although it runs a lot better than it did it's still a bit inconsistent.

Currently timing figures are:

dial up is at anywhere between +13 to +26 amplitude is 209 (but starts at around 270 - 280 then drops after around 20 - 30 seconds) and a beat error of 0.3

dial down it generally sits around +29, 265 - 272 amplitude and 0.1 beat error

Crown up varies between +7 to +25, amplitude is between 228 - 242 and the beat error is 0.3

Crown down varies between +9 to +12, amplitude is around 240 - 250 and the beat error is 0.5

Crown to the left is around +4, amplitude 223 - 227, beat error 0.3

Crown to the Right is +80 to +160, amplitude around 240 , beat error 0.0 - 0.1 then is flattened out to -1 to +0 then varies between +46 to +171 then sits between -10 to +15

I worn it last night for a few hours and it lost around 3- 4 seconds then left dial up over night it was at +6 seconds.

I've cleaned it twice, replaced the main spring check jewel holes, checks the pivots, it has had a new balance staff but that seems to be okay.

Anyone get any advice on getting this to run properly?

Just to give a bit of background on myself, I have been teaching myself watch making for around 2 and a half year so still very new. I mostly do vintage wrist watches but have done a few clocks and pocket watches and I've just taught myself how to turn a balance staff for an early 1900 quarter repeater I have.

Thanks,

Chris

The massively low amplitude in the dial up position is the first thing that I would look in to. Are you sure the balance pivot isn't bent or otherwise damaged? Check the bridge side cap jewel and make sure it isn't worn or damaged. Do all of the same checks for your escape wheel as well, you never know. I assume you've checked all of your endshakes and escapement adjustments?

Thanks for getting back to me quickly, it's had a NOS bridge side jewel and cap which is perfect. The all the pivots and end shakes seem to be fine but i'all take another look.

Just as a quick update I've been wearing this for most of the day now and the timing has changed:

Dial up is around +14 to +19 with an amplitude around 260

Dial down is around +21 with an amplitude up to 284

Crown up is around +1 to -8 with and amplitude of around 250 - 260

Crown down is around +10 with an amplitude of around 250 - 260

Crown to the left is around -18 with an amplitude of around 250 - 260

Crown to the right is the worst at around +39 to +44 with an amplitude of around 248 - 253

I'm a it stuck here it keep changing.

I'd be willing to bet that the large delta in the vertical positions is from poise error, so that won't really get much better unless you poise the balance. Almost 25° difference in amplitude between dial up and dial down still seems a bit large, but obviously better than what you were getting before. Make sure the tip of the upper balance pivot isn't flattened at all. It doesn't take much to kill off 25° of amplitude.

Well looks like I'll need a new balance, well hair spring at least but never managed to find just a hair spring. I noticed it was coiling odd and there was one coil that was slightly misshapen, long story short it's now got a big twist in it.

Been there before. Practice makes perfect, and you should always expect to make some mistakes while practicing. Just try to be a bit more careful next time, and maybe even get some practice on the junk hairspring. As long as it isn't totally kinked, you could probably get it back to a somewhat usable state with enough work.
