I own one from 1986 and a brand new no date, honestly my 16800 wears better then my new one and looks as good. I do like the micro adjustment on the band of my new one.

I'd get a new ceramic bezel with the warranty. Either way, he's going to be thrilled, but the new one is definitely a "better" watch for only a little more $.

For a sentimental gift, vintage is far more thoughtful. Buying new is just a commodity.

I'm sure you've read that LeBron gave Phil Knight a vintage Rolex (from the year Nike was founded), engraved with "With thanks for taking a chance on me.”

Head over to the vintage forum and repost this. You'll get lots of good advice.
