Can you spot a Rolex?
I get joy out of spotting a Rolex from a mile away. Something about the beautiful shiny bezel always catches my eyes. And once I see someone wearing the crown I take the opportunity to use it as a conversation starter. I want to know if any of you out there do the same thing and if so did it lead to any interesting conversations?

Recently had a customer wearing a brand new LVc. I said "your Hulk looks awesome ". He gave me this puzzled look and said what are you talking about. In that moment I realized I'd been on TRF too much lately. He said he had just bought it the previous week while on vacation. Knew nothing about his watch other than it was a green Rolex. It was an enlightening conversation.

I do sometimes but with subtlety. First thing I look for is the oyster or jubilee bracelet then slowly try to get a glimpse of the case, bezel, and dial. I do get fooled sometimes with a copy cat. I almost never strike a conversation though. Maybe it's a culture thang

These days I can't tell who's is real and who's is fake. The good fakes are are hard to tell on someone's wrist

Now here's an interesting question to add - do you look at the person wearing it and try and decide if it's real or not?
In my opinion you shouldn't judge a book by its cover as they say, but it's really hard with this one! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I notice a lot more now since buying my first and joining here, never started a conversation though. I'd feel uncomfortable if a stranger came up to me and starting talking about my watch, I wouldn't like to put someone else in that position.

Just had 17 days in the U.S, not many in North Michigan but saw lots in Florida and NY, maybe it's because I have a Bluesy but that was the most popular one I spotted or it could be there easy to spot too?

Usually, yes, but rarely do I even see someone wearing a watch - let alone wearing a Rolex.

It mostly means that their watches are fake. Specially bought on vacation. If you buy a thousands dollar watch then you also want to know what you buy/ have bought. He would have known it was called the Hulk ;) All Rolex owners i know have digged into the history of Rolex.

I usually spot them from a distance. I give people the benefit of the doubt and assume the watches are genuine but probably there have been fakes amongst the many I have spotted in the wild.

![]() I went to the post office this morning and noticed the post master wearing a yacht master, as I was the only customer there, I went about my business and the commented on his lovely Rolex, he thanked me and said he got it for his 50th birthday, I said something along the lines of "well it'll still be just as nice and still ticking strong in 35 years like mine" as I showed him my vintage. We were both really chuffed about our watches and conversation. Of course I told him about trf and must have spent 5 or 10 minutes chatting watches until another customer came in. It's the first rolex I've seen in the flesh but I do find myself looking at celebrity wrists when watching TV and here in Britain it's astonishing how many wear them, from Mike Brewers Daytona on wheeler dealers to almost every antiques expert on the various daytime shows. Digital TV has a lot to answer for since I can pause live TV. ![]()

I can normally spot one! Some of the Invictaesque watches catch me...i usually try to glimpse the clasp to confirm. I start conversations on occasion if timing is right and it is not too awkward. I am more apt to start a conversation with someone wearing a professional model than a Datejust or DayDate.

We are only a small group. I've met plenty of people who wears a Rolex because of the perceived status symbol or quality.
Ask them the model or anything about the watch they have no clue. Also never judge a person by the clothes he wears. Met plenty of builders who look like scrubs all dirty and bummy looking. One particular builder wearing a very scratched up platona. Thought it was a fake until I learned his family was worth $300 million. |

Agree. And it is certainly not a woman thing. I've talked to a couple recently who barely knew the model of their Rolex especially, and I expect they were genuine. No reason not to assume that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I do not yet own a Rolex but am very close to my first. I have lurked here for years, and read articles online and in print, and stopped by the AD window shopping and relationship building for the day I am ready. I subconsciously look at nearly everyone's wrist to see what they are wearing. Rolex steel looks different even from a distance. It's brighter than other steel. Their cases are iconic and relatively easy to identify. Stienhart and Invicta (both of which I see in the wild) do sometimes cause me to double take. I am outgoing and talk to everyone I come into contact with (e g I am the guy who says good morning and talks about the weather to strangers in the elevator). If I notice their watch is a Rolex I briefly and sincerely tell them I admire their watch in a way that does not expect a response. If they engage so do I. Unfortunately it may make some feel awkward or uncomfortable. To them I hope my warmth and sincerity eases their pain. As for the others : we have a fun energetic conversation for a minute. I love meeting new people!
