Submariner vs. Submariner Date.
I see a lot of people on TRF who say they prefer the submariner over the submariner date. Personally I feel like the date complication and cyclops are indicative of the rolex brand. (Just a personal feeling)
Would anyone tell me why so many seem to prefer the submariner? |

The first Subs were non date. It's traditional, it's simple, and it has clean/classic dial symmetry. Some people want a Rolex so it looks inodicative of a Rolex while some people want a watch that harkens back to the origins of the model. Or they just want the best sports watch one can buy and they don't need a date.
Cyclops may be "indicative" but it's not my favorite look and I prefer my 114060. |

The Submariner had its debut at Basel Fair in 1953. Only twelve years later the Submariner Date was released. That alone is reason enough.

The first sub didn't have a date and james bond always had a date, just not the type that is on the face of his sub.

Someone I used to work with had a sign that read "Don't date yourself ". I have no idea what that was supposed to mean, but the Sub started with no date so it is traditional, the date is handy and inspires winder threads.

I prefer the Submariner for a several reasons:
1. I think the clean and symmetrical dial is much more aesthetically pleasing. The cyclops is kind of ugly in my opinion; it's as though someone stuck an obnoxious wart onto a work of art. 2. I like the way it pays homage to the original Submariner. 3. James Bond's Submariner didn't have a date either, and I must say I'm a big Bond fan. 4. Did I mention the beautiful symmetry? |

Well why are you buying a Sub to dive or to tell the time? If your telling the time buy a watch....if your buying a driving watch by a No Date Sub

I love both but find the date practical.

I have always preferred the date model (I have two) however a close friend has a non-date he purchased 20 years ago and I have to admit it looks terrific too-both are winners!

The sub would be even more symmetrical without hands, but they have a useful function, just as the date does. I guess it comes down to where you want to draw the line between having decoration on your wrist, and having useful features. Cost is also an important consideration.

No date, or the Submariner as it's known as for me...and it's my daily wear piece as well.

I did a poll last time and I believe date was favored 55/45 so very close. If I were to get one I'd get the no date but do like the date on other colors.

I need the date function so a Sub Date has always been my choice.

I got both two weeks ago on a nice deal, I am keeping the date and sell out the new/not used No date.. Many people love the no date for the "clean" look of the dial, I love the cyclops and date function

Never really got interested in the ND Sub. I currently have two both with dates.

I believe if it’s an one and only watch for a person. The Sub Date is the way to go, perfect all rounder.
Someone adding a watch for the weekends maybe will prefer without the date feature. Obviously this isn’t a hard and fast rule but it seems to ring true in a lot of cases. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I think both look good, and would be a tough call between the two. I don't think the cyclops is particularly good looking, but I do appreciate the functionality of having a date. I think in my opinion, the date is a case of form following function, and does not contribute to the looks of the watch in anyway.
In my case, if I were to buy a Rolex diver it would probably be a 16600 or 116600 |

And thank you for using the proper description of Submariner and Submariner Date! (No such model as the "no date".) |
