Buying 114060 Pre-Owned Value Question

Hello,

I'm thinking of getting a 114060 Submariner and I am wondering is there really a lot of value in buying pre-owned? I've heard over and over that buying a Rolex pre-owned is the way to go. Perhaps I don't know the best places to look, but I've been on a half dozen different pre-owned dealer websites and checked the sales area here, and I'm not finding many beating the price I'm getting offered from my local AD.

MSRP is $7500, my AD is offering me 10% so I can pay $6750 for new in box w/ warranty. The majority of pre-owned pieces I'm finding have higher asking prices, or a few at best are a couple hundred dollars cheaper.

With that in mind is there really any reason to not buy new, or am I looking in the wrong places? I have noticed a few individual/private sellers with better prices but I'm not willing to take a risk and buy from a non-trusted seller.

What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Rolex is a weird market. Preowned prices can be near or often above the RRP on a new model. It's down to a shortage of some models where the value goes up but the value of many PM models (not all) often goes down.

If I was in your shoes and intended to keep the watch, I would buy new.

Buy AD, why take the risk. I bought my SubC and BLNR at the AD at a good price and enjoyed the experience.

That's a nice price but does it include tax? I'd try to push for more off if going with an AD. Have a look around the FS section and see what asking prices are for new and used. That should give you a baseline. Good luck

No that doesn't include tax, that was just the starting price they offered me. I would try to negotiate another few % if I was about to hand over the cash, but I can't say for sure that they would give anymore or not on the price.

10% off is strong. I'd take it and run.

I bought my Z Blue for only $300 more brand new over the best deal I found on a used one that was 3 years old. One thing that does tell you though is that they retain their value, or if you got an amazing deal that your new is cheaper than used pricing.
If I look at the sales forum ( I did last night) for Z Blue Milgauss, I paid less for new than current used prices.

Take your time and be patient. Wait for the right deal to come to you be it used or new.

What jrs146 said. Then have it shipped out of state. Now you save 10% plus the taxes.

Good luck.

I think I sold my sub here for around $6000 (maybe $5900?) and it was a very nice watch in excellent condition. I bought it used myself, so it cost me very little to own it for a few years. There are sellers such as myself who are just enthusiast collectors who like to vary their collection, and although I don't have hundreds of feedback posts like some sellers, I have enough that most people are comfortable buying from me. And there are thousands of guys like me. I've personally never had an issue buying from anyone on this forum (I do take care to research the seller) but I do know that some folks have had issues with unscrupulous sellers on the Internet. It happens.

Be careful, maybe find someone local to you so that you can have the watch authenticated if you want to, but I always recommend buying used when you can. The savings are almost always worth it.

I would buy new from an AD with 10% off. No worries and your name is on the warranty card. Plus, you establish a relationship with the AD if that is important to you.

I am very pro pre-owned but If you can get it for $6750 and even better negotiate the sales tax I would certainly go the new route. Everyone has their number but I have to save at least $1000 to justify a pre-owned purchase vs new.

The 2 reasons to buy used is if the price is significantly lower than a new piece or if the used piece is a discontinued model. If you can get a current model new and at a price not too much higher than the used one, then I would buy new at an AD.

I just bought a brand new 114060 from an AD for only a few hundred more than the trusted sellers were selling them used for.

Definitely go with the AD and get a new one with the way the second hand market is now.

Can't find new ND for under $7k anymore even from trusted sellers. For the price you are being offered I would take it and run like others said, even if you have to pay tax on it.

However, I've bought used in the past from trusted sellers and saved almost $2k vs buying new from AD for msrp + tax. Used ND's go for around $5900-$6400 so you can save yourself almost a grand if you find the right deal. Something to think about.

Huh? I see a few within 31 daya on watchrecon.

Randomguy had one for 6250...

Use a credit card also and get cash back, takes even more off. I got a little over $200 when I got my sea dweller.

A few months back I was shopping for a 114060 new at my local AD

I had previously read that one could expect either a small discount or no discount for a SS sub.

So when my local AD offered me 10% off before taxes, I figured that was enough reason for me to jump on it.

Curious to hear back on what you decide, and if you go the AD route, how much off you'd be able to get if more than 10%

I’m not seeing a BNIB at 6250 anywhere on WatchRecon (and I’ve been looking for a while)... OP is more correct a BNIB from trusted seller is typically at or just below $7k at the moment.

Also Randomguy sells from Canada, so there is a (especially if the customs declaration and insurance value are accurate) very good chance US customs would hit you with some kind of import duty, which in California means then the California tax board gets that the info from customs that you imported something valuable and sends you a letter to ask you to pay the use tax on it.
