Pretty exciting being in patek club....
Hopefully you will be able to empathise....
When I first went from omega (SMP) to rolex (sub date) I felt I'd just taken a step into a bigger world. I had no idea then, that I'd have the bug bite me so hard. Eventually, after about 6 years - I have traversed pretty much the whole collection. In some cases with several revisited references. Where I ended up was in no way even on the radar when I started. I was obsessed with the sub. Now I don't even have one. "Just" a c500 Will it be the same with the patek? "Just" got a 5711.... But where might it go from here?? Is there a predicted route within patek? Or from patek? |

Patek is a very fine watch, but fragile. I don't wear mine very often (3919 j) but I do like the looks of the 5711

You will need a lot more cash to truly go down the patek rabbit hole but yeah when I got my first patek it was very much like my first rolex. Something special and I still feel that way today about Rolex and Patek. Marketing is a b$%@

Watch collecting/ownership is like going for a drive — you can plan a route in advance, or just go wherever the mood takes you along the way to an originally intended destination.
Both can be a fun adventure, with many outcomes — no one route is the only one or the correct one for each individual. |

Owning a Patek was a very special feeling - a milestone in my watch collecting journey.
The only thing is that buying Pateks are not like buying Rolexes as they cost a heck of a lot more on average, so it's a process that means less impulse buys, more thought and waiting before jumping on the next one. |

Another issue is service time, honestly owning a Patek is very much like opining a finicky exotic car lol. Frustrating at times but ultimately worth it...probably.

my first Rolex and my first Patek were pretty great feelings for different reasons. I love other brands too, but the feeling isn't the same with any others for me.

I got more of a kick out of my first real Rolex, a subc, as it was my first real luxury watch and broke me in, plus it led to TRF. The kick for my first PM, was an AP and as big a kick, but then for my first Patek I was a bit more blasé. I was also a good boy and waited a couple of years for my second one, so you don't have to rush things.

Sounds like you enjoy doing a deep dive of a brand. I think you’ll end up with a few PPs after a while, but it’s much more cost prohibitive. You might want to look into AP and ALS, who are in the same peer category too.

Completely agree! I remember my first Rolex and my first Patek. Such a milestone in this watch collecting hobby of ours. If only I knew then that I was heading down the rabbit hole

i am not sure if there is a predictable route, I bounced all over the vintage and modern pieces, my opinion as far as watch "growth" between the two brands...
The peak of Rolex (an outstanding watch) is the Skydweller or the DD (depending on whom you ask) for complications, the Daytona arguably for history and style. The peak of Patek is (a diffrent type of outstanding watch) is the 6300g, the Nautilus arguably for it's Genta style roots and model history. Rolex collecting (at some level) caps ones interest in watch complications and movements where as Patek is almost limitless. |
