Red Sub or New Daytona

Hi, need your advice...

I have received an offer for my Red Sub Mark V (1680) full set, in exchange for a new Daytona Black Dial 116500.

What are your thoughts?

Makes no sense. But then again.. The second hand price for the new Daytona makes no sense either.

How much would you want for your full set if you just sold it? How much would you be willing to pay for the new Daytona if you had the cash? Somewhere around there you will find the answer to your question.

No offense, but I HATE when people reply with things like this. No doubt, if funds weren't issue, this would be the case. However, the OP asked the question at hand probably because 19k is a large sum of money for most of us.

i used to own the red sub, and am in the market for the exact same daytona you're being offered, and i prefer the daytona, BUT you would be foolish to do that trade! keep the red 1680. if you still want the daytona, sell the 1680 for more money and buy the daytona, hopefully closer to msrp vs this bullshit grey market markup.

I understand your dilemma. I like both watches. For me the 116500 is a practical every day proposition whereas the 1680 is something I would only wear when I know it is not going to get knocked around. I have the Daytona and have a 1680 incoming (with service dial). I know the 1680 is going to get way less wrist time and I find vintage pieces a liability to own if used a lot. I know people are going to disagree with this but that's my opinion. Anyway I would find it very difficult to part with your Sub. I hope whatever you decide makes you happy.

I don't think vintage watches are so fragile as you make it out to be. As long as you are mindful and wear it sensibly ie. no swimming and getting it dry after washing hands, vintage watch can be worn daily.

Btw, I would choose to keep the red sub. Its so gorgeous that modern watches can never match!

they don't make the 1680 anymore; the daytonaC will be in production for a long time and eventually will get back to the right price. Don't be foolish.

My preoccupation is that my Red has been serviced and some pieces have been changed. So i do not know how does this affects the price of the watch.

I don’t believe that’s a service dial. The experts can chime in.

Only thing I trade that thing for is a 1655.

i agree, forget about the value. For what It's worth, I wear my 1680 Red daily, and would have a hard time parting with it. If you like the Daytona, just buy it!

Me personally have no attachments to red subs.....so personally I'd pick the Daytona. But IMO if you like the red sub.....I wouldn't trade that full set for a modern Daytona that's still in production.....seems like a recipe for regret.

Big plus one/+1 on this. It's obvious we are quite the subset of WIS..but god knows I don't have a ton of extra cash to throw at this silly watch habit.
This market is crazy. I am not a buyer in this market. I can't believe in the last 18mos the prices have literally doubled for several watches I purchased.

Ever since I embarked on vintages, the moderns don't appeal to me in the same way...just my 2 cents, but comparing the 2 is like comparing an apple to an orange... not the same. if funds are tight and having both is not an option, then ask yourself whether you want something endearing and vintage, or a modern piece which is still in production.

but for a straight trade, I think that's fairly inbalanced, imo

Forget about the value? Sorry but I think it should be what you look at first, then what you like more. You don't want to buy something like this with only your heart.

Modern watches have many advantages if it’s to be your daily wear and one and only watch. The current Daytona, in it’s many configurations is, I think, the best looking and best proportioned watch in the Rolex range.
