The Best Thing About Grand Seiko
The guy who sits next to me at work knows I have a few nice watches. He usually notices because my watches are always facing him. I've handed over my Rolex and Omega when he's asked about them.
He asked if I got a new watch and I simply replied "It's a Seiko" Conversation stopped right there Picture from last week.

I respect GS quite a bit, but I honestly don't understand the love of having an expensive product confused with a cheap product. Very few people notice what I'm wearing regardless, so I think it's a moot point. Do like that watch quite a bit.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Omega and my Rolex, but the vast majority of people who wear those brands are wearing them because of the name and nothing more. When I look down at my wrist and see this Grand Seiko, I know exactly what I'm looking at. That's more than enough for me. It's the same reason why I would rather spend money on shoes from Crockett and Jones rather than Ferragamo in the same price range. |

I'm wearing it for myself. The same reason I wear a Rolex or a $14 Casio.

I got the point without explanation. Some of us don't need to lie to ourselves about why we have what we have.

Keeping the brand snobs at arm's length - Another good reason to get a Seiko (Grand or otherwise)

When you have shown your Rolex and Omega to this guy, why not say this is higher/luxury brand of Seiko known as Grand Seiko. Maybe he would get educated and know about the brand. What's the point to not mention Grand Seiko when you do about other luxury brands?

Finally got mine from Japan last week. 5 days, not a second lost or gained. BTW, I think GS does a horrible job depicting their watches in catalogs and their website. The pictures sell these watches way short.

Gorgeous watch !
I mean, shame on you obviously, for buying a watch because of it's outstanding craftsmanship, truly superlative timekeeping and understated, yet wonderfully detailed and layered looks. What were you thinking ?? |

One buys a GS to impress themselves, not others.

When I was younger and less educated about watches I focused on brand names and many times I would share an opinion based on my limited knowledge. The longer I have been in the watch game the more I have learned and the less I make judgements. The Grand Seiko is a great watch and I will own one at some point. I equate it to the statement that those who know, know, those that don't, don't. A few years ago I bought a Range Rover HSE. I did the research and knew what I was getting into but did it anyway. I loved the look and it got a lot of positive comments but it was the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Now I own a Lexus LX570 and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned, to date. If you know what the Lexus is and can do, you know. If not, it is just another large SUV. Same with Grand Seiko, if you know, you are impressed.

Well said. too many people are wearing the brand instead of wearing the watch. Ends up the watch wears them.

I had no problem explaining GS to my watch buddy who is very green. I said Seiko as a brand makes watches from 10 dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. GS is a line that offers the finishing one would expect on a 50k watch for 5k.

I’m just getting acquainted with the GS, a very good reputation among those in the know. I tried on a few last week at a local AD, surprised they had three or four in stock. Hi Beat vs Spring Drive, still debating; stainless vs titanium, still debating. One thing is clear, very nicely finished cases, beautiful movements, understated appearance.
Hope you enjoy yours !!

I've enjoyed several GS quartz models, my nephew loves the one I gave him. He just adores it. But I think GS now need to raise their game, because they can seem a touch complacent.
This Longines VHP cost a third as much; yet it is even more accurate...five seconds a year...with a perpetual calendar included. And a five-year battery life. Not quite as nicely finished but in some ways, a better watch, to me anyway. So come on GS. We need a replacement for the f9 module, and a proper perpetual calender feature, with longer battery life. You charge enough after all. |
