My First: Rolex DJ 36mm 116200 BKAO

I turned 40 a couple of months back and as fate would have it, I received a better than expected work bonus that I considered to use for an upgrade in my value sedan. Yet, for some reason I felt inclined to treat myself to a Rolex, my first. Just a year ago I was content with my Seiko Turtle and my Longines Master Collection, but after studying, trying on, and ruminating over the history, tradition, and engineering marvel I converted to the idea that every man, if able to, should have one Rolex in their life and one that is timeless.

I tried on and studied many watches, but decided on the Datejust 36MM. Initially I considered the Milguass and the Datejust II, but realized that my wrist, in reality is only 6.5 inches and I've also faded away from the trend of bigger watches. If I got a Rolex, it would have to be classic, yet subtle, so the 36MM Datejust with Arabic numerals was perfect for me. I received it last week, slowly peeled off the stickers and I can not explain what a wonderful honeymoon it has been. I love it.

Everyone is different, some would say, why not the ___, why not a larger dial, why not the Roman or sticks over the Arabic numerals? But in the end, it's the watch that captured me, defined some aspects of me, and one I hope to pass down to those I love. It's my first Rolex and I can say, good things do happen. And No, I don't regret driving an older Hyundai to work when I have this on my wrist for good times ahead.

If it's the watch that spoke to you, then it's the right watch no matter what anybody says!

Good for you, congratulations!

I remember when I got my first Rolex - it was in February 2004 and was a Datejust with rhodium roman dial. I was in love with that watch until the day it was stolen in 2013.

Since my first one, I've had a DJ2, a GMT, a new Datejust and an Explorer II, but none have had the same magic as my first Datejust.

Wear it in good health, it's a beauty! The Arabic numerals pop on that dial!

Riskwalla, I'm in your boat as well. Ive been looking at rolexes online, reading this forum and popping in to an AD in Houston randomly to look around.

I too have nice bonus coming in the next few weeks and will be buying a Rolex. Currently I wear a Seiko SKX and have an older Tag Heuer I got as a gift many years ago. I don't want a SubC, I'm looking at the Explorer 1 and Date Just. I initially wanted an Air King but slowly changed my mind. What made you go with a DJ36 instead of DJ41? And did you get yours from an AD in the Houston area or here on the forums?

Eric. Sorry for the late reply. Early congrats and I hope your bonus is greater than even anticipated. I don't think you can go wrong with any Rolex model, but felt something personal reach out to me with the DJ. The reason I got the DJ36 as opposed to the DJ41 is b/c when I tried on the DJ41 is looked a bit too "showy" on my small wrist. I felt that the DJ36's proportion to my wrist looked more timeless. I was going to purchase mine from an AD, but found a new one on True Facet which felt like a slight risk, but I'm glad I did as I saved some coin. Good luck!
