Just Purchased my first Rolex, and..

Hey All, just bought my first Rolex, a 16013 Datejust TT. I hope it will be the first of many!

I ended-up buying a used DJ without it's case, didn't think I needed it, since I already have a watch box for all my other watches. However, after further thought I'm beginning to think it might be a good idea to get an actual Rolex box, just in case I sell it in the future. This made me think of a few questions (below), and thought someone here could help me figure it out...
  • Is it worth buying another case to help preserve the resale value?
  • Should I try to buy the same kind of case from the 1980's when my DJ was produced, or does it matter what year case I get?
  • How can I figure out which watch box model came with the 16013 Datejust?

Good question. I had the same dilemma after purchasing a Vintage Daytona without box some time ago . I just felt I wanted to have a box for my own preference and o think it probably does add something to the resale ( in my opinion) so waited around and eventually sourced an age appropriate box for the model . I researched what was needed simply by trawling through the web/vintage dealer sites/watch books etc

The box does not mean anything. As long as your watch has been lightly polished or not polished, original non restored dial, original movement that came with the watch and original bracelet your good to go.

Sent to Rolex Service Centre for service. Get it in writing not to replace dial or hands and no polish as long as watch looks reasonable. Then enjoy your Rolex. Post pictures of your new watch on the forum if you like.

If you buy yourself a Rolex box I’d guess the resale value of your watch will increase by more or less the price of the box.

Just bought your first Rolex and already thinking about selling it, LOL. How about you just wear it and enjoy it?

There’s a list somewhere here in the forum which can be searched which provides the period correct box numbers with the watches they were sold with in the day. Have a look for it.
All boxes and manuals etc can easily be sourced on eBay once you know which ones you need.
As for increasing the value, it’ll only go up by what you spend on the boxes etc. It’s probably not worth it unless you’re OCD about your collection....like me!

About 30% of Rolex owners have no idea what happened to their box. 40% remember tossing it so they could wear the watch through Customs without paying any duty. 10% gave it to their kids to play with. 10% sold it on E-ay. 3% the dog ate. 5% have rented a safe deposit box for 35 yrs at a cost of $600 so they could someday sell the box for $200.

You bought a really nice watch. Wear it, enjoy it, take care of it, and don't worry about the box.

I now watch boxes in the gun safe along with all the paperwork including the sales receipt. Having a pristine box and papers makes the watch more desirable to a buyer. I make jewelry boxes as a hobby so I have a place to keep a watch that’s in rotation. The “resting” watches are in the gun safe.

Thanks for the feedback all, I guess I’m just OCD about my first Rolex. I guess I’ll just get a box if I ever decide to part ways with it, but not likely

I gotta say.... I appreciate the overall support from this forum, I’m glad to have joined this community!
