You're being too picky. Grab a Rolex in your price range and get over it, it's not perfect just a very nice watch.

Rolex also doesn't make the watch that i want.....it's a stainless steel professional series that ADs can actually sell or that makes it to their store shelves.

A 39mm Explorer 1 Date would be incredible. I’d be all over one. I’m not a fan of the Ex 2 either.

Sounds like you need to buy a GMT Master II LN. Currently it's one of the best values in the Rolex market. You can actually get one for under retail, and you won't lose hardly any money over the next ten years.

Check out Grand Seiko. They produce a multitude of GMT watches.

I was about to suggest this. Especially the models without the 24 hour bezel, it might be what you are looking for. Otherwise save for the Rolex gmt.

Long time reader of this forum - first post. I have learned a lot from reading the posts from the experts on this forum.

I too wore (and still wear) a Tag Grand Carrera (SS, brown dial, date function). Ten years later I still get compliments on it and it is incredibly accurate. I have since added a DJII (SS, smooth bezel, silver sunburst dial), a BLNR, and just recently, a Tudor BB GMT with a navy blue leather strap. As someone who owns both a Rolex and Tudor GMT, I echo the recommendation that you look at the Tudor. I had about a 6 week wait for mine from an AD, but that is much better than the current Rolex SS GMT wait times if buying from an AD. I have not experienced the date issue with my Tudor (knock on wood). Both the BLNR and BB GMT were very accurate when I tested them over a 14 day period (average of +0.2 sec/day for the BLNR and -0.4 sec/day for the Tudor). Both of these and the Grand Carrera are much more accurate than my DJII (which is within spec).

I would suggest keeping the Tag and looking at the Tudor BB GMT with a leather strap (about $3,600).

Every year in the months leading up to Basel, rumors fly about the Explorer II being introduced with a ceramic bezel. It hasn't happened yet, so I wouldn't hold my breath. Besides, if it did come out, it likely wouldn't be much less expensive than the current GMT LN.

Here's the RPR mock-up of what it could look like:

If Rolex produces that watch, I'm all over it. Bye bye GMT2 BLRO, Hello Explorer III. I just need the 24-hour hand to be independent. At 42 mm it should be my ideal size. I've been struggling lately with the 40mm size of my GMT Master II 16710. It's just barely large enough for my taste but I think I'm convincing myself of this more than feeling it.

Get the GMT, and enjoy it. It is aspirational and will make you happy.

This mockup is a wet dream for me. I'd so love it, but I'm afraid that to Rolex it would blur the line between itself and the GMT II LN. That's why I think it's a long shot. The more I love it, the less likely it is that we'll see it. If Rolex said they were going to release it at the next Basil World I'd put a deposit down today.

Think about it like this......buying a Rolex sports model is like putting your money in the bank. Most often if you need to sell it, you can break even or lose very little on the transaction.

Put your name on the AD waiting list and be patient. Then you make your savings for the GMT master. The wait is gonna take sometime so you can easily save the money for the buy! Don’t settle for another watch, that doesn’t work and you will be flipping it fast..

My Tag has an independent 24 hour hand, and it just makes life much more easy when you are moving around the globe.

But I am the opposite as far as size goes... 38 - 40mm is about my perfect size, and I think the newer 42s are a bit big for me.

That makes sense, and I agree. I dont think we will see this watch from Rolex. An Air King with Date and GMT perhaps, but not a black beveled Explorer II.

What many people love about the Exp is the balance of the Arabics. Putting a date there, particularly a cyclops, would really throw the symmetry. 9, 6, and that? Would look bizarro, IMO.

Then there are the knock-on effects of having a 24-hr arm.

It would all be like putting some Elizabethan (better not say Tudor) chimney pots on the Parthenon.

I suppose its all about personal taste and wrist size. My wrists are 7 3/4" and while I've always preferred more wrist presence in my watches, lately I've been looking for just a little less. My other watch in rotation is a 44.25mm Omega Speedmaster (co-axial). I think 42mm would be my sweet spot.

I was waiting for that as well but don't think it will ever come. It doesn't even have to be ceramic, just black.

The concept is that it's a fixed bezel, just like the current Exp. II. Think ceramic Daytona - no knurling needed.

The Explorer has a fixed bezel. That's a big differentiator with the GMT Master line. I don't see Rolex changing that aspect of the Explorer II.

I'd take black painted aluminum too, but with Rolex's trend towards Cerachrome I don't think we'll see them going backwards. Rolex is all in on ceramic.

Save for the GMTc, by the time Basel comes around you should be good to go but I can't see a CE Exp 1 or 2 being released.

Yeah but the problem is that all the chocolates and champagne you have to buy your AD just make it take that much longer to save.

Going back and forth between the GMT Coke, and the Explorer II, I decided to stay cheap and go with the 16570 in black. The more I looked at it, the less the bevel bothered me.

I will wear it in good health and happiness until such time as I want to move to the GMT... which may be never. The functional difference between the two isnt all that much, after all, especially seeing my wants of second time zone and a date function have been met. And with a 3K difference in price, it just made more sense for me to buy the EII.

So I now have incoming!

Thanks for the input, folks!
