I'd say Sub or Explorer II on NATO.

I've worn my 14060m Sub for the last 13 years of active duty in the Navy. A couple things I like about it for military use.

- The bezel comes in handy as a timer.
- The movement is reliable and has never failed me.
- It's less "jewelry" than the shiny modern subs.
- The lug holes make for easier release of springboard with a paperclip and I feel like the spingbars are more secure.

I usually wear it on a strap when I wear under harsh conditions. So far so good.

Prince Harry was famously photographed on active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan wearing a dusty, dinged up explorer II polar.

I’d thing the ruggedness and two time zones would be handy. You could keep the 24 hour hand set to your home time zone and always know at a glance what time it was for your loved ones.

Good luck, and thank you.

Explorer II > GMT > Submariner in that order.

Any Oyster can take s reasonable amount of abuse and are dead reliable, never need to be wound (or will during your tenure need a service unless you're making the military a career) and have no battery to fail. An Explorer would be an excellent choice.
The rotating bezel on a dive watch is essential to me personally. I use it virtually on a daily basis to time various things. I think that's one of the most useful features of a diving watch outside of diving.

I’d be leaning towards a modern explorer 2. Most robust watch Rolex makes in my option and the non rotating bezel is a huge plus. Not to mention the white dial is probably the legible, you get a gmt and the bracelet is rock solid

I carried a 16750 for 26 years as an armored guy.

Current officer in the Army, and I wear my 116710 LN GMT daily (or close to...). I work in logistics, so I mostly ride a desk, but we do go to the field and I work out of a tent, jump in and out of trucks, and work around some heavy machinery. Besides my annual qualification, I shoot in my spare time and I haven't seen any change in timekeeping since starting to wear my GMT.

I also have a Seiko Marinemaster 300 SBDX017 that is a beast and has taken some very hard hits without any change in timing. I will say I wear this one running/working out more than my GMT.

Both watches have silicon hairsprings (GMT=Parachrome; MM300=Spron), and I attribute that to a lot of the shock resistance.

Fantastic story, Ed!

I also wore a GMT the last 10 years of my service. There are lots of more practical watches, but dammit, it makes you feel good wearing it in uniform.
