Wiscon - 2019 Compensation

TRF has never received any financial benefit from any GTG.
TRF has never received any financial benefit or reward from any Wiscon or AboutLife GTG activity.

However, on a personal level I do not believe a "non-refundable deposit" for $150 should be retained for a dinner/food when the attendee arrives at a restaurant and is told is not a seat for him to sit down.

I personally feel if a person pays $150 as a pre-payment and they turn up to the event they deserve to get a seat. The payment secures a place and it shouldn't be subject to further confirmation by the attendee that makes no sense. If the attendee doesn't turn up and there is an empty seat at the dinner/event then the $150 covers the cost to the restaurant.

I personally feel a refund is warranted but only the party who received the money or otherwise benefited from it can give a refund.

Accordingly, I cannot give a 'refund'.
I can however make a discretionary payment under no compulsion or request to do so.

Similarly, I am shocked to hear bills dropped on dining tables at the end of a meal for thousands and thousands of dollars.

I want the recipient of this compensation payment to remain anonymous for fear he/she may be harassed. Again I stress this was a totally voluntary payment by me.

I will hear (privately) from anyone who believes he/she should receive a refund for compensation.

That’s big of you Steve!

It’s sad that the person that should be doing the compensating isn’t.

Solely for the purpose of disambiguation - there is long-standing prior art and I do not believe the offer Steve made was intended to extend to that trademark’s owner: http://wiscon.net

Steve: this is a particularly beneficent gesture - just the kind of remedial step that befits TRF’s collegial horology mission. Kudo’s

Very nice of you Steve. What a mess. And it has been for years. Obvious much more was going on. It’s a good thing you have chosen to disassociate TRF from this, the blind devotion to its organizer has been really baffling to me.

Wow. It's impressive that Steve is now compensating certain individuals out of pocket, but sad that it has come to this.

I am uncomfortable with someone soliciting $15,000 from TRF's membership and then being unable or unwilling to account for how it was spent. I am glad this "event" is now unaffiliated with the forum. The responses from the organizer were baffling and unsatisfying. To that end I agree with Trace -- I believe Trace is a totally positive member who doesn't criticize things without good reason for it.

Being that TRF members were victimized, I understand why you are doing this and applaud you. It’s unfortunate that it even comes to this. We should have heard about this when it happened in the past though. I’m hoping Gerardo does the right (honorable) thing here.

Steve, to me, that is above and beyond. Very thoughtful and generous gesture of you! I can only imagine your frustration in having this situation occur, given TRF had no fiduciary or marketing link with the event in question, but was the platform used to organize the event. Top notch!

Wow, this is a very classy move Steve. To make amends for something you had nothing to do with is amazing. There is obviously more to the story than I know. The whole thing is shocking and sad because I had a really great time and loved the watches, the people, and the events. But obviously, it could not continue.

Nice move Steve.

Before everyone gets on a bash wagon, there were more than one of the attendees that left a hefty amount at one table, $1,700! And one of our attendees PAID IT!

I had a great time at the event, as always, and look forward to the next one!

Wow, this is a very classy gesture, definitely the higher road. This is what make this forum so special. I was not at first able to grasp what was or had happened but now I get it (I think).

I agree with another poster in that when Trace spoke up, I listened. He has ALWAYS been one of the most positive people in this forum since I joined. For him to take this position made me wonder if something else was going on.

What a great move!

This is something very unusual. Plenty of talking nowadays, very few are truly acting according to their values.

I am very happy belonging to this amazing TRF-community—for the love&passion of watches.

Thank You.
