OP, tbh the wait times the AD quoted you as a client with purchase history don't really sound any better than if you had no purchase history. I would be willing to bet those wait times would be reduced drastically if you picked up a few PM or hard-to-sell models that they had...

I don't want to be "that guy", but buying one or two in-demand pieces from an AD doesn't do a whole lot if anything these days as far as priority. ADs are most interested in selling their high-priced and unpopular models. They know selling their SS sports models is guaranteed, they just want to maximize their efficiency by moving other stock with those pieces as well.

Thanks for posting this. The Rolex market is indeed very strange (and frustrating). I can see the salespersons face and stance change the minute Rolex is mentioned. I know lots of jewellers and a couple of ADs and it gets awkward when I talk Rolex. They know im a buyer but they also know I like to try watches on, spend a bit of time with them and then do a deal. With Rolex that isnt going to happen which is where it gets awkward. Ive been told im "on the list" but im aware that can mean anything. They did tell me that I WILL get one as im a regular customer but I know that ill get pushed down a rung if a MORE regular customer wants one. This brings me to thinking about pressurising them. Do I keep popping in? If dont, will they think im not interested and allocate it so someone else? All in all the buying experience isnt much fun. I haven't been given any timescales either although he did say the pepsi was "a complete waste of time" for what its worth. Someone mentioned sky dwellers being hard to find? Ive seen a few of those in AD windows over the past few months.

After completing the purchase of my watch today I sat with the AD drinking the AD's champagne (unfortunately the bubbles were a bit lacklustre), and talked Rolex watches.

The conversation centred around the SS Professional (SSP) range of watches.

The AD explained that they will not sell a SSP watch to someone unless that person has bought another Rolex watch from them.

Initially this sounds bonkers, how can you buy a Rolex if you haven't already bought a Rolex but due to the popularity of the SSP watches the dealer expects people to buy other SS models, Explorers or OP's or DJ's, or maybe a PM model.

So having bought my DJ I was asked what other watches I was interested in or was my purchase my sole Rolex. After a chat my 'want' list reads as follows - AD expected delivery time included;

Submariner - 12-18 months
GMT Master - Pepsi around 24 months but Batman 5-7 years as it is so very very popular
Sky Dweller - Black or White dial within 2 years but the Blue dial well that will take.......................................forever , it is sooooooo popular.

I asked if there was any chance of seeing a Submariner as I had never seen one in the flesh, after laughing the AD said that they would check but it was unlikely as they went straight out. Less than 5 minutes later and I am holding a SS Submariner Date, and very nice it is too. The watch was due to be picked up the following day.

The AD did comment that the Submariner may be due for an upgrade as it is the only watch that still uses the 3135 calibre, the AD expects the watch to be upgraded to the 3235 in time for Basel 2020. If this did happen the the AD stated that waiting times would rise drastically as the watch would be hard to get as production is ramped up.

Overall I felt that I had a good conversation, I think it was honest and without any Bull, the dealer is clearly doing their best to balance new and existing customer to the world of Rolex.

Finally and perhaps most importantly I have a watch with a 10 year guarantee, the dealer provides a 5 year guarantee that commences after the Rolex warranty runs out. So the watch is covered until it goes for its first service in 10 years time.
First cannot see why if and when Rolex change from the 31 series to the 32 series in the subs will take longer to get on market. Its exactly the same size as the 31 series and the robots can churn them out just as quick as the 31 series. The 32 series movement is loosely based on the older 30 series movement.

Feeding Grey

All this does is feed the Grey and counterfeit market. Guess we need a global recession to knock demand and grey prices down.

Daytona wait times are similar to the sub. Probably 12 months

But only if you buy a PM piece or 2 + other history. 2 years if you are in at a busy AD with a very wealthy client base and you are particular about the dial colour
Same here,,,got the distinct feeling the new blnr was accessible in a reasonable amount of time,,,

However, Rolex service period is 5 years not 10 years. Initially I thought the WOS Group offering 5 additional warranty years was a great idea, however what are the chances that you approach them in say year 6 with a fault and they say "well it's been more than 5 years probably needs a service"...
10 years not 5

Yep see comment 14 I stand corrected after checking the Rolex site, although I’ve had numerous AD’s tell me 5 years in the past but if Rolex say 10 then you can’t really argue with that!

I had to chuckle. They bring it out like the hope diamond. Back in the early 90s when I bought my first Rolex, they were laying in the cases on top of each other..

Nice write up

The Pepsi wait list at my AD is 5 times longer the Batman jubilee. The reason is existing Batman waiters got transferred across. But the Pepsi uptake was huge as supply is short by 3:1 vs Batman.

Luckily my AD had furnished both verities to me. But they are a well supplied AD and the Pepsi list is unobtainable at present. More chance of a Daytona i expect
