I opted for the 5146 because due to the case shape it wears much better than the 5396. Also I find the 5146 can be dressed up or down.
I do like the 5396 but its quite thick and straight, sits like a dinner plate on your wrist. I love the dial layout but the more i look at the date window in compariosn to the day and month it looks too big. |

I am new to the forum - been following for a few weeks now and this is my first post. Both are great pieces, but I am partial to the 5146 - may be making this purchase in the next few days myself. Here is a wrist shot of a 5146 in WG with the creme dial i found in Kyoto last week. Have an appointment to see the WG w/ slate dial tomorrow. [ATTACH]

Both are great pieces, but the 5146 just draws me in. It's a beautiful piece.

5146 gets my vote....the more classic looking Patek watch...plus you get the power reserve.
The 5396 has a more modern feel to it, and I would rather have that look with the 5726 version.

I'm facing this very decision, and don't know what to do.
Love the layout of the 5396 and everything else of the 5146. My concern is 5146 legibility on the cream dial, how is it? I have a big issue reading the time on my Lange 1 "Darth" on artificial light, the hands disappear on the dial, no AD coating does not help. Do any of these watches have AR coating? Would have to have another unreadable watch.

Funny almost 6 years after the original post on this thread, I faced the same dilemma and voted for a 5136g with a cream dial as my 1st PP. :-)

Is 5146g for me as well. Is a quintessential Patek reference as far as I am concerned.
