Comedian Palito passes away

Veteran comedian Palito has passed away Monday, April 12, at the Philippine General Hospital due to a lung complication.

In a breaking news report on “Umagang Kay Ganda,” the 76-year-old actor was declared dead at 7:05 a.m.

Among the last to see the comedian was former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada, who visited Palito the night before.

Reynaldo Hipolito (Palito’s real name) was rushed to the Imus Family Hospital on April 6 after complaining of a serious stomach pain. He was transferred to the ward section of PGH on the same night.

"Galing siya sa [trabaho]… Pagdating sa bahay halos hindi na makalakad at nanghihina na...kaya dinala na namin siya sa ospital," recalled Jhune Hipolito, one of his four children, on “Showbiz News Ngayon,” April 6.

Prior to this, he had been confined at the hospital for a month due to a lung complication.

“Kasi po si Daddy, nagii-smoke po siya. Nung tinigil po niya, dun siya nanghina po,” Jhune said.

The news of his illness first broke out via the Facebook account of Rivermaya drummer Mark Escueta. The OPM band worked with Palito for the music video of their latest single “Ambotsa.”

Support for the ailing comedian poured in from his colleagues in showbiz, including Robin Padilla, Bong Revilla, Jericho Rosales, and Fernando Poe Jr.’s half brother Conrad Poe, as reported by ABS-CBN.

Other young celebrities such as Anne Curtis, Francine Prieto, Maxene Magalona, and Angel Locsin also called out for donations through their respective Twitter accounts.

Palito, who kept a low profile in showbiz, had continued to work to support his family. He played drums in a combo that performs at a casino in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Palito, whose career began in the 60s, was dubbed “Buhay na Bangkay” because of his stick-thin figure. His comic career soared in the 70s, having starred in “Ram-Buto” and “James Bone,” spoofs of iconic Hollywood characters “Rambo” and “James Bond.” He was also part of the classic sitcom “Home Along Da Riles.”

Veteran comedian Palito rushed to hospital, remains under observation

Veteran comedian Reynaldo Hipolito, popularly known as Palito, was reportedly rushed to the Imus Family Hospital today, April 6, after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

In a text message sent to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) by the comedian's son, Jhune, at 4:10 p.m., he mentioned that his father arrived home from the casino feeling very weak.

"Masakit daw un sikmura niya talagang hindi na nga makahubad ng pantalon saka shoes niya. Ayaw pa nga padala sa hosptal," Jhune's text message reads, as edited.

It was also mentioned that prior to his hospitalization, Palito was sick for an entire week and just stayed home.

At press time, Palito's condition remains under observation. Senator Bong Revilla has reportedly volunteered to shoulder all the medical expenses that will be incurred. The family, however, is still appealing to the public for additional financial assistance.

In a conversation with PEP in 2007, Palito proudly boasted about his good health despite his trademark emaciated frame. "Pero kahit ganito ako, wala akong sakit," he said with a huge grin. He was 74-years-old at the time of the interview.

Some of the films done by Palito during his heyday in the '70s and '80s include Rambuto and No Blood, among many others. Both films were parodies of Sylvester Stallone's international blockbuster action flicks.

Considered as one of the best guards who came from the Visayas, Marata made his mark while playing for nine seasons in five PBA ballclubs. He played from 1989 to 1997 and started his PBA career with Alaska Milk.

Marata also suited up for Sta. Lucia, Shell, Sunkist and Pop Cola. He is survived by wife Charo and children Ricardo Jr., Danica and Nico.

The speedy 5-foot-7 playmaker, who is also a deadly outside shooter, played a total of 397 games as a pro where he averaged 6.8 points per outing.
